Hi my m8 has the above cpu his 8800gtx just went bang today so he cant post himself.
So hes wondering if he got etheir the 670 gtx or the 7950 will it run ok he has 580 watt psu not sure of the make 4 gb ram and 2 sata hds.
He will be upgrading after xmas the rest of his pc.
 
I would definitely not buy a 7950 with that cpu. I have a 7870 and have noticed a performance increase in most games going from a phenom 2 @ 3.4ghz to a 2500k. The phenom is twice as powerful as your friends cpu and it was a bottleneck in some games.

Edit. Just saw that he will be upgrading the rest later. Yeah it will be ok.
 
There's really nothing wrong with buying either of those GPUs, but he's definitely gonna be holding them back in a lot of games with that old dual core CPU. As a plus point though if he upgrades his CPU/motherboard/ram in the future he can carry the card over easily and unleash its full power.
