E6300 and E6600 - How far are they clocking?

The chips themselves clock great, however they may need lapping to clock properly (like mine did) as the heatspreaders are often not flat.
 
There's a local computer shop nearby. It's more expensive than online but I thought about asking if I could take a look at the stepping. Is this visible through the box (in the same way AMD's are visible through a clear window)? If so then what would be the better steppings to look for?

is it easy enogh to remove the heatspredder?
