I've been overclocking my machine for the last week or so with a E6300, DS3 and 1gb GeiL Ultra Low Latency ram - but encountering problems.

A friend has been helping me through it, but the problem i've been getting is i've had the machine go from stock up to as far as 3.4 ghz one day, but another day it wouldn't boot. So i'd reset cmos and start all over again. I'd then have problems reaching something simple like 2.1ghz without either constant BSOD's or an error saying "Windows is corrupt". So i'd go away and try again - but then i'd get it say to something like 2.8 ghz and everything would work fine!? This process would just constantly repeat over and over.

I've tested the memory seperately and its good up to 1000mhz, so i've ruled out that. Then i tested the motherboard up to 500fsb - no problems. And even the CPU didnt seem to encounter any problems.

Its just weird and starting to really p me off. My friend suggested that it may be the motherboard IDE controller thats the problem (since i'm still living in the 80's with an IDE hard disk), could there be any truth to that? Windows XP is a fresh install.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated,

Thanks.

Sounds like a corrupt windows install or memory problems - have you run memtest for a good length of time?

Yeh, i ran memtest+ for at least an hour at 1000mhz (5-5-5-15) and also 800mhz (4-4-4-12) - which came to about 8-9 passes. No errors.

As for the corrupt windows, i was thinking of doing another fresh install, was just confused as to why one minute it can say corrupt or missing file - then i up the voltage 0.05 and it will boot normally..
