Ok, so I followed Duke's overclocking guide found at http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17610180

He stated on number 5 of the overclocking guide that:

"Enable CPU Host Clock Control and increase the FSB (default 266). Depending on your chip and ram, you will need to keep an eye on the System Memory Multiplier. Make sure your ram is still running the correct speed after increasing FSB. In the screenshot below you can see I've set mine to 2.0 which means my ram is running just under it's default speed (800)."

I did this, clocked my CPU Host Frequency to 400 and my Memory Frequency is running exactly 800 Mhz. This results on my E6300 to run an exactly 2.8Ghz. However, I saw some people with E6300 reaching 3Ghz and beyond. How can I achieve this? Can I increase the CPU Host Frequency and go beyond the rated 800 Mhz speed of my ram?

I have the Gigabyte DS3 mobo and 2 x 1gb OCZ pc6400 ddr2 ram

Hi bimmerboii,

To go above your ram's rated speed when overclocking it would be best to lower your ram's default timings, to either 5,5,5,18 or 6,6,6,18. The 6,6,6,18 ram timings will allow you to raise your FSB higher then the 5,5,5,18 timings.

The reason you lower your default ram timings is so you can take your ram out of the overclocking equation and concentrate on finding your highest cpu overclock.

When you have found your prefered/highest cpu overclock you can try and lower your memory timings.

Just remember, when overclocking everybodies system is different. So try and find an overclock you are happy with, whilst also taking into account the temperatures of your system,

I hope this helps :).

I've managed to hit 3.5Ghz on my E6300 with a 1.4V vcore using OCZ PC6400 Spec Ops, hopefully when I get some PC8500 and a Q6600 I'm going to send the E6300 off with a bank and try to hit 3.6Ghz

Thanks for the reply guys. Actually im running my E6300 on stock volts (Voltage set to auto). I did not bother changing it. Would this also affect overclocking? As of now my computer has been running stable anyway.

My ram has 5-5-5-12 timings. So you suggest I try 5-5-5-18 and 6-6-6-18? If I was to lower it more, how would I know how many notches should i lower the timings? (ie can i try 5-6-5-18 or something like that?)

Yeh, with the Vcore I'll explain thus, set your mem divider to 1:1, raise the mem voltage to the highest it's warrenty covers then start raising the FSB in 5mhz increments, so do 5, reboot, 5 reboot and so on, if it wont reboot then clear the cmos and enter the highest fsb you've got so far but raise the Vcore by 0.25 and continue, keep doing that till either your ram is crying or you hit 1.4Vcore which is as high as you want to set it on air.

Is this what you ment by set memory divider to 1:1? Cos i dont see any option in the bios to set the memory divider 1:1

Also, I did increased my Vcore to 1.345 and my ram voltage to 2.1 (which is the maximum voltage that will still be covered by the waranty)

I did try an FSB of 425.. Computer boots but after a few hours of running 2x SP2004 stress test it halts.. is this a ram problem? do i need to lower timings?

Also what is the ideal temp for the CPU? speed fan shows my cpu is at 45 and 48

I have one last question guys, what is the ideal temperature i should be having from an overclocked e6300? im now running at 2.8 and the temp is 45 and 48 respectively. I can imgaine that if I go higher (3.0+ Ghz), the temp would go up more..

im using a zalman CNPS9500.

another thing... How do i clean this cooler? Thick dust have gathered between the thin copper fins!

Mine at 3.15 runs idle at about 37 degrees and when loading performing folding@home it goes up to 55-60.

This is with a Scythe Ninja, and with regards to cleaning, a can of compressed air would do the trick.
