Hi all,

Right im rather new to overclocking and im goin to buy a new system.
I was thinking of getting a Core2Duo 2.4 but i want to be spending as little as possible (Dont want to go all out untill vista is fully released with some Decent DX10 game i.e. Crysis)

Well being the cheapskate i currently am after browsing this wonderful forum a bit i began thinking of getting a C2D 1.8 doing some much needed research and overclocking it. So my question is this, As a guesstimate what sort of speeds would i be looking at comfortably achieving with air cooling?

Thx
Dave

Anything from 2.4Ghz to 3.4Ghz. Totally depends on if you get a decent one and if your other hardware which is up to scratch! Do a bit of a search and you'll find loads of threads about E6300's, seems everyone has one now ;) :D

Welcome to the forums

6300
DS3
Geil 6400 DDR2

will see you 3ghz on air quite easily.

And offer fantastic bang for buck.

Thx very much, info is much appreciated.

Now on to another question - Before easyrider's hardware suggestion i was pricing up a system with a DFI infinity 975x Chipset, but the DS3 is 675p. Ive had a scout around the net but the answers have left me quite confused, so i was wondering if someone could clear up the differences between the 2.

As far as i can gather 675p is newer and the differences are that 675p doesn't have the crossfire support (which im not bothered about) and there is some differnce with memory compatibility, but ive just seen to many conflicting comments.

Thx again

Dave

Chipset for DS3 is 965p which is generally considered lesser than 975x.

975x allows more options when the memory and the front side bus are running at different speeds. The ratio between these speeds is known as a devider (so a 975x chipset board potentially has more deviders available than a 965p chipset board).

Have read clocks for E6300 chips are better on 965p chipset. Clocks for E6600 (with 2mb more ram - roughly equivelent to 400Mhz more speed in performance) are better with 975x.

Hope this helps.
