e6300 temp. normal?

When I built my machine some time ago, I got the e6300 oem which means it did not include the heat sink and fan. So I ordered the Zalman CNPS9500-AT CPU Cooler and used it right from the start.

Now here's my problem. I never really bothered checking the temps of my cpu until recently (I used the latest version of speedfan). My cpu is overclocked to 2.8 and it idles around 52-54 on stock volts! Reaches around 66 on load. I figured this is too high knowing that C2Ds run cooler and knowing that my Zalman cooler of one of the best out there.

So I took out the cooler and cleaned it and resit the thing (lots of dust have gathered cos I had it for quite some time now). Now my cpu idles at 49. So I decided to restore my cpu clock back to original (@1.86) and it idles at 42. I cant figure out whats wrong.

Any ideas? My friend's E6750 @ stock speeds with stock cooling idles around 22-24.

Bad case air flow?

My case has 1 fan on the front and 2 fans on the side.

did you clean the CPU and replace with fresh TIM after you dismounted the cooler?


Use core temp to check your temps as it measures directly off the CPU (DT) DIE

Core temp is showing the roughly the same temp as speedfan. Sorry but what do you mean by TIM? Did u mean thermal paste?

What was your friend using to check their temps, and how much thermal paste did you use and what type.

My friend used speedfan as well. I used the Artic Silver 5. what I did was I put a small amount, (like 2 drops of water) and spread it all over the top of the cpu with my finger. Or is that wrong?

Just a question though, is the arctic cleaner necessary? or can I just wipe it off with a cloth? Also, how often should I be changing the thermal paste?

No, use some vodka and cotton buds if you do not have a TIM cleaner. It removed the old TIM completely from the heat sink preparing it for a fresh layer.

Once applied you do not need to do regular changes of TIM. One application is all you need

When you originally applied the thermal paste did you use your bare finger to spread the TIM on the CPU?

I did use my finger, but wrapped my finger with cling film before spreading it
