After finally getting round to downloading and installing GTAIV from Steam I have found that it doesn't play all too well on my system. Very laggy even on the lowest graphics settings.

My setup: E6300 (old gen) @ 2.8GHz, 5GB DDR2 PC2-6400, XFX 8800GTX

I probably need an upgrade and I'm looking at the E8400 or Q6600 route, which one would be best here?

Q6600 is quad core and is the way to go as any quad core nowadays is becoming mainstream since more games are using more than 2 cores plus it gives far better performance in video editing, rendering etc.
Although E8400 can overclock higher to 4Ghz as some people have managed but it will struggle in Multi-threaded applications against Q6600:).
 
same system as the one im gonna sell in a week, i would say Q6600 and a better psu for a better gfx card, gtx 570? that would hold that pc up for another year or two also dont u need to change ur ram to 1066mhz stuff?
 
i3 540 would give better performance than either the Q6600 or E8400 in the majority of situations and be cheaper (assuming you were considering replacing mb as well, if not ignore me.)

Yeah I imagine it would, I certainly see the difference between my i5 430 laptop and this. However I don't have the money to fully upgrade this PC atm :)
 
I've gone E6300 to Q6700, big improvement in the game, not as epic as you might think going off raw FPS (its still better) but general handling and smoothness of the game is greatly enhanced:)

Buy a console :)

I remember i had a e7400 @ 3.95Ghz ( I'll never forget it ) and a HD5770 and it destroyed gtaIV on highest gfx, think the HD5770 is only about a ton now anyway was about one fiddy when i got mine. But its such a good card for the money - 8800Series Old mate - don't bother upgrading unless your going to upgrade both.
