Hey all, Im abit confused about RAM speeds and their advantage.. im gonna buying in a couple of weeks:

E6300
Gigabyte DS3 mobo

Im not sure what RAM to go for. I want 2gig and ive seen that the geil value 5300 and the geil 6400 (orange heat sink) ppl here are mentioning. What I dont understand is ppl are getting good OCs on the slower RAM it seems. Is there any reason why I need to get 6400 speed ram?

Ive made some mistakes in the past with buying RAM which has crippled my OC'ing ablity so I do want to get good RAM but I don't want to spend more than I have to.. im on a budget! Id be happy with an OC of around 3.1 Ghz

Thanks for the help

I would say particularly with that processor, with its low multiplier, you'll want the faster ram. And its not too expensive either, its good stuff.

Basically to get 3.1 ghz out of that chip you are going to have to run an FSB of 443 mhz. So, as far as I know, you are going to want memory that can run to at least 886 mhz (using the 1:1 divider setting or in other words the setting for DDR2-533).

The Geil Ultra PC6400 will be able to do it, I'm running mine at 960mhz at the moment. I wouldn't count on lower rated 'value' ram coping with that sort of overclock though.

Thanks for that I see :)

Do u find it to be good RAM Papa Lazarou? As ive seen in the geil 6400 thread theres mixed ideas about it.

To me its a lot of money for RAM 150 odd quid, could be used for a future GPU upgrade!.. But I suppose I shouldnt skimp on RAM like I have done in the past otherwise i'll be disappointed again.

Yeah no complaints from me about the ram at all. But I'm using the 1gb kit (can always upgrade but for me 2gb is not a must have yet). The 1 gb kit is more or less a tenner over the value kit. Seems to be a bigger price differential with the 2 gb kits.

But like I said, if you want the really high FSB speeds, fast memory is going to be a must :)
