I currently have a system which looks like this:
Pentium 940 dual core (3.2ghz)
7800GTX
2gb DDR2 RAM
I am thinking about a reasonably cheap upgrade for xmas which would let me play games like COD4 and Bioshock at fairly high settings at 1280x1024 (not that bothered about loads of AA) If I could get a new mobo and an E6400 for around £75 lightly used would that be a good buy? Would I notice a decent improvement on my current system? And would the addition of say an 8800GT in a few months give me a pretty high spec gaming machine for the next year or so?

what MB is it, if its a good OCing one the e6400 would be very good over your current cpu at stock and if you overclock it, it will have made you wish you paid more for it.
also does everything fit on the MB?

Hi - its an asus P5N-SLI SE Deluxe. The mobo comes with the processor and it was used together with it, so you think it would be a good buy and play COD4 and Bioshock with my current setup?

2.13 conroe-2m vs 3.2 smithfield isnt very much of an upgrade. Make sure you get a good overclocking motherboard and once you start hitting 3ghz+ youll see a massive clock for clock improvement.

Not a great overclocker. But the value you are getting is good. £75 for an e6400 plus a good quality old motherboard is unbeatable. Even with a 320fsb limit, youll hot 320 x 8 which isnt terrible.

As mentioned you may regret not going for a better motherboard.

I run a P5W DH and an [email protected], rock solid! The P5W is fairly old now so you should be able to pick it cheaply 2nd hand. Check out my 3DMark to see what it can do with a decent GC, you wouldn't be disappointed.
