E6400 or E6600?

Well the E6400 clocks very well, but i guess they'd both top out at roughly the same speed.

If yopu can afford the e6600 then go for it :)

I don't think there is a huge difference in potential between them however the 6600 has 4mb L2 cache compared to the 2mb L2 cache of the 6400, the additional doesn't make that much of a difference in most applications apparantly but if you are encoding video or similar then it is worth it I believe. I'd personally go for the 6600 out of the two as I work on the basic assumption you can overclock whenever but you can't add cache later. :)

The 6600 has the best overclocking potential, but is not worth the price.

With the 6400 you may well hit 3.4GHz, with the 6600 you might hit 3.6GHz. Makes no difference in the real world. Just get a 6300 tbh. :)

Woah, Core 2 duos can overclock by a whole Ghz?! I'm guessing that makes a whole lot of difference... does anyone have any benchies to show?

What do the E6400 and E6600 run @ stock (average) does anyone know? Cause on comparing that I guess to hit 3GHz if they are similar at stock then surely the E6600 would be cooler. Going on that I would opt for the E6600!

w3bbo has reached 4GHz stable with his E6600 on watercooling :) They are highly overclockable if you can get a nice motherboard, RAM combo!

Just slighty, my 1.8GHz E4300 is overclocked to 3.4GHz (89%), on air.

For the most part. Thats why we like em :-) Substantial power for a bargain.

Both are great cpu's that will overclock well. The e6600 has double the cache but these chips are so fast that with a decent overclock you would be hard pushed to tell the difefrence. Have seen the e6400 hit 3.8ghz (easyrider) and the e6600 reach 4ghz(w3bbo), both on water. If its overclocking potential that your after then the e6400 offers the best % increase.

To get those type of overclocks though you really need to know what you are doing. No offence to the op but asking which is the better chip i doubt he is very experienced in overclocking.

I dabble a bit and 50% overclocks are relatively easy to achive so i too would say if you can afford it get the 6600 and overclock to 3.6ghz as linked to the memory this would give a nice round 800mhz too.

If you're on a tight budget, then go for the 6400. If not, the 6600 makes sense, as you've potentially got a bit more headroom for a better overclock, especially if you're not an expert on overclocking ;)
