e6400 temps, hsf probably not secured properly...

Well. I had a very quick play with my new e6400 + Scythe Ninja last night and results were.....toasty :eek:

Basically I'm now running at default voltage and a tiny tiny overclock due to the processors jumping to high 60s almost instantly as sono as I turn on orthos.

Now, due to my case being a piece of manure, the ninja was an absolute bast to install. I also notice that it doesn't feel as though it's on with anywhere near the high-tension levels that I'm used to from my old s939 setup.

I'm guessing that I've just messed up the hsf placement but I've not had a chance to look into it properly yet.

I'm just wondering if there's anything else anyone can think of that I'm missing...

Bit more info:
6400 with scythe ninja and default fan
ds3 mobo
2GB Geil 6400
x1950xtx
Audigy 2ZS
Antec 480w psu
random hdds/etc

Case has *very* good airflow as I modded it (read: ripped giant holes in it) and added extra 120s and 80s for intake at bottom and outtake at top.

Measured the temp with coretemp.
 
I had the same with my e6300 but that was using an arctic cooler.

If in doubt about the hsf installation u have to redo it. Have u taken the vCore from auto to manual yet? because some boards get a bit keen with the old stock volts. Its normal for the temps to rise quite quickly on the core2 series because the temps are coming directly from the core I believe?

Still something doesn't sound right there? If/when u redo the fittings u can check to see how the contact was? Good luck!

I think it was just such an utter utter pain in the arse the first time that I'm desperately looking for excuses not to have to redo it :p

What's odd is that at stock volts and speeds it seemed to idle at 29-31 and load at 40. Perhaps I've knocked off the hsf placement somehow. Those clip things seem highly dodgy.

It's currently at auto though I think I *did*play with voltage at one point. I've also disabled the usual three for power savings..like idle state/whatever (still have an AMD mind so it's hard to remember the new acronyms) :)
 
Best thing would be to reinstall the HSF. If you can remove the mobo from the case & then install the cooler.

We all hate removing the mobo from the case, but its the best way
 
I reinstalled it last night. I'm guessing my problem was that the black plastic bits weren't screwed roudn the right way properly, resulting in not enough tension. I may have had too much AS on too though you'd have thought I'd know how to do that by now ;)

Anyhow, new idle temps at stock are 25c & 27c - a somewhat massive improvement.

I've played a little more and got the processor seemingly stable (no major testing yet) at 3.2. Bit dissapointed in that but I'm a bit scared to push it too far as the tempts do rocket up with more voltage.

I never get lucky with my chips/overclocks. My Athlon 750 with KT7 motherboard wouldn't hit a gig.. My xp2100 wouldn't go above 2.1... My SD3700 maxed out at 2.75...etc

I guess I've not been *really* unlucky so far so I should be reasonably happy ;)

How're your conroe clocks? (going from your sig pic on that assumption)

Edit: In /re to hitting it with dual prime, I've ran Orthos a little but not long enough to be considered proper testing by most here :)
