E6550 vs Opteron 170

The Intel by quite a margin. Overclocking wise it should be fine up to 3GHz maybe? Hard to say really as the Intel cooler is great at stock but will obviously struggle if you OC and put a little more voltage through the chip.

hm ok , because i got the option of swapping my lounge pc (e6550 on a p35-DS3R gigabyte) with my gaming pc (opty 170 on an A8N Sli-Deluxe) and vice versa...

could then transfer my Radeon 4850 from the Opty170 to the E6550...

I should see a noticeable improvement I presume!

I've just upgraded from a Opty 170@3GHz on a a8nsli-dlx to a e8400 (3GHz) and it was much faster and that's before OC'ing.

I've gone from a water-cooled set-up on the 170 to air cooling on the e8400 and with a good cooler/fan set-up it's pretty quiet even at 4.1GHz.

As has been said I think you'll be limited with the stock cooler if you look to overclock above 3GHz

I would do it, but personally would get a decent cpu and gpu cooler and OC them both a bit as well.
