The temps on my e6600 are stupidly high, i cant overclock more than 3.0ghz because of it. I understand a lot of people have this issue. I was just wondering if re-purchasing and getting a new 1 would solve this issue?

says 3.4ghz in your sig ;) :p

but yeah some do run hotter than others, have you check your heatsink is seated propery n that the cpu ihs is flat. If it aint give it a lap to help temps. Also check heatsink for flatness :)

i think (correct me if i'm wrong) that the thing that varies more is the amount of voltage to reach a specific o/c...

for example:

my cpu requires 1.45v to run 3.2gig (really pap) and loads at about 52°, another cpu might run 3.2gig lot cooler but probably due to the fact that that cpu only needs 1.35v or something to run the same frequency...

if you get another e6600 it may well clock a lot better for less volts, hence cooler, so do you research and try and get one with good stepping, i didn't invesigate this properly and will now pay the price for the next 2 years or until i upgrade...

I’m interested in one of these CPU’s will you please explain what checks or research you are referring to.

I've googled and this appears to be revisions by Intel based on previous experiences with a particular CPU.

This therefore seems to be a question of checking which the latest revision is, and other things being equal, try and determine if a given retailers is supplying it.

Some batches of processors are better for overclocking than others, require less volts etc...

This can be referred to by their stepping and batch No., so he meant by research to find processors with good steppings allowing for high overclocks.

I bought my pc pre built (alienware) as I had no idea how to build one. And it seems I've been unlucky with the cpu I have. As even with good cooling, lapping and chucking high voltage at it, it just isn't 100% stable past 3ghz. Even at 3ghz and 1.3v it runs at 54 degrees under load!!!
I will definately be doing my research when it comes to upgrade time!
Isn't hindsight annoying

To find a decent clocking cpu, you will need to look for it's stepping, also labelled as the 'fpo/batch number' on the box.

It is generally believed that the L628B or L627B stepping codes are the best clockers, with reports of over 4ghz, but thie same rule as above applies, they aren't all good clockers, and it will also depend on the other hardawre used, ie clockability of the motherboard and ram. Getting one of the above stepping CPU's will greatly increase your chance for a better clocker, but by no means guarantee it.

Hope this helps

Does this number relate to all chips or just e6600

Ideally you would check the best stepping for each cpu you buy, as each cpu is different. However some cpu's are similar across the board whereas others are not.

my e6420 gets to 3.4ghz and wont go any further, on water also, i have even tried 3.5 on 1.6v even though it runs 3.4 on 1.45, watercooled also, i think its just a bad chip even though im pleased with 3.4, i think its my NB getting really hot stopping it from clocking more, i manage to get 15 mins stable before a reset.

This is pretty confusing  How do I find my code as all cpuz tells me is it being 2. And, I don't have the original box the chip came in as my pc was built for me. And, also how the hell do people find where to get these "uber chips" as I have googled and come up with nothing

the code is only found on the box and on the cpu IHS.

You can't really specify which codes you get when purchasing from e-tailers, mostly when you get them 2nd hand.. from the members market for example..

So its pretty much pot luck when buying new then? Bit of a bummer, if your aiming to get really high clocks as you could be forking out hundreds on a lame chip :(

yeah winter i could! i got this in winter and it clocked fine, soon as it started getting warmer my oc went completely downhill! Even in winter, i knew i had a massivly shte chip cos of temps are like 20c above others!

Iv tried 2 diff heatsinks, ninja and infitity, and have reseated so many times. I think the cpu might be concave, i dunno. I was hoping it would get so hot and be unstable at stock so i could get a replacement.
I aint confident in lapping it because no dought i wont sand it perfectly flat.

Would be nice if some people with a cool chip, clocking the 3.6 mark on air could let me know what batchnumber and stepping they have
