E6600 COMPATABILITY QUESTION

this might be a daft question, i now know that cpus are now rated not so much on clock speeds but other attributes. an E66OO 2.4GHZ WOULD BE MUCH FASTER THAN A P4 NORTHWOOD 3.4GHZ, BUT IN THE MINIMUM SYSTEM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR GAMES THEY SEEM TO GO BY CLOCK SPEEDS. MY QUESTION IS , IF YOU BOUGHT A GAME THAT SAID MINIMUM CPU-P4 3GHZ WOULD THE GAME STILL RUN USING A 1.8 OR 2.4 GHZ E6600? OR WOULD YOU GET A POP UP SAYING SOMETHING LIKE- "YOUR SYTEM DOES NOT MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PLAY THIS GAME"?

1: try removing caps lock ;)
2: a conroe (core 2 duo) would absolutely show a pentium 4 where the retired chip comunity is.
3: no you wouldnt get that msg saying not enough speed etc.

i have a E6600 at 3ghz and even when it was at 2.4ghz it was double the speed of my old amd 4400 dual core at 2.9ghz

:)

Had an Intel P4 3.4GHz N/Wood on an Asus P4P800 E Deluxe mobo, Superpi 1M 40 secs, now have C2D E6600, @ stock speed (2.4GHz), Superpi 20 secs, @3.1GHz, 16 secs.

The C2D @ stock speed would be just over twice as fast/powerful as 3.4GH/z N/Wood. :)

unfortunatly there are games that go by clock speed, steam (atleast with the current release) will popup a message when you try to start some games (i.e. lost coast) if your CPU MHz doesn't match the minimum requirements - fortunatly with steam you can just click ignore to the message and carry on anyway... there are some games that stupidly won't even let you launch... but they are rare.

thanks for that mate. i haven`t started to build the new system yet but i just thought it was worth asking as i play a lot of games. better to find out now than after i`d bought
bought the chip! :)

E6600 will overclock to 3gig completely safely and easily - I don't know of any games that the minimum requirements are 3gig or faster (lost coast is 2.9) most are 1.6-2.4.

steam will NOT give you such a message.

o-rly?

OP: YOU MIGHT GET A WARNING DEPENING ON WHAT GAME YOU PLAY, NOTHING TO STOP YOU PLAYING THE GAME THOUGH.
OBVIOUSLY THE CONROE IS FASTER THAN THE NETBURST SPEC, SO DOESNT NEED TO BE THE 3GHZ.....ETC....

;)

Doubt it somewhat. Your Practically saying a stock E6600 has the same

performance as a 5.8Ghz AMD x2. Core2's are fast but they arn't that fast mate.

X2 4400 @ 2.9gig (I'm not an expert on clocking them but I don't think most go past 2.75 with any stability) would be roughly similiar speed to an E6400 at stock...
