E6600 cooling

I'm a bit worried about the temps of my E6600.

I ran a quick stress test using Everest and it reached a max of 73 deg C in a couple of minutes.

The temp at idle is mid to high 50's.

Surely this cant be right.

I'm using a Sythe Ninja (Rev2 I think) with a 120mm fan. I used Arctic Silver 5 for thermal compound and didnt use too much or too little (I dont think)

The CPU fan only spins at a max of 1215(ish) rpm. Is there any way I can speed that up?

I have 2 80mm fans drawing air in the front of the case (Lian Li PC60) and one 80mm fan at the rear blowing outwards.

The CPU fan is on the side of the heatsink blowing the air towards the rear fan.

To be honest there doesnt really seem to be much room for air to circulate freely around my case as I have a 8800GTS that could possibly be causing a wind breaker effect with the front fans.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tested Temps with your case side cover off ??

This will mainly tell you if it's getting to hot inside your case or not..

No, I have always kept the side on my cases to keep the air running through as it should.

It never crossed my mind really so I'll have a try.

The motherboard temp is usually around the mid 50's too.

take a look in the bios for fan speeds. set to 100% if there. or the temp for it to change, from leave as is. to lower to under temps ** getting. then it'll run fuill speed. deppends on the speed the fan is rated to tho.

try reseating the heatsink making sure theres nothing its sitting on apart from the chip.

bios voltage/cpu speed settings are set right. so it aint overvolting.

would help if u say what board ** using!

Since taking the side off the CPU has dropped to a lowest of 36C for core 1 and 40C for core 2.

The mobo temp has dropped to 47C.

I ran another stress test (3 mins this time as opposed to 2 mins earlier with side on) and core 1 peaked at 50C, core 2 peaked at 52C. Mobo went up to 48C

So it seems I dont have enough airflow through my case.

Its just a bit noisier now with the side off, but I'll have to live with it until I can find a solution.

Fan is set to 100% in BIOS. The fan is the standard one that came with the Scythe HS.

Will take a look at the seating when its cooled down, but to be honest it seemed to sit pretty well. I wasnt happy with the way it attached to the board though. The push clips are a terrible invention. (This is the first 775 system I've built. Are all 775 heatsinks like this?)

No overclocks or voltage changes at all, everything is default. Apart from my memory that I've dropped to 667MHz to get it to run with 4GB in the mobo which is an Asus P5N32-E SLi Plus. (sorry for not mentioning earlier, didnt really think it mattered lol).

your airflow must be worse than mine, with my side on i get 45-50 idle, and 60-80 load, with side off i get 30-35 idle and 50-70 load

some 775 heatsinks are worse than the push pins, mine i had to take entire mobo out and screw the cooler in from the back

When you say the fan is blowing air towards the rear fan, is that on the rear side of the heatsink nearest the exhaust fan, or on the front side? I think people generally get better temps with the later.

The CPU fan is on the front side of the heatsink blowing air through it towards the rear exhaust fan on the case.

Its pretty bad I expect.

To be honest, I'd prefer the screw in from the rear type than the push pin. I dont like pushing too hard when the mobo is in the case and would end up taking it out anyways lol.

I used to run a P4 3GHz (with a Thermalright heatsink thats not even a quarter the size of my Scythe) and an ATi X800XTPE and never came close to these temps. I suppose the smaller size GFX card allowed better airflow around the case.

Aren't Core2Duo's were supposed to run cooler?

This isn't the first thread I have seen about the Ninja's cooling inabilities. If you can afford it try another fan, Noctua NH-U12F is generally recommended as a good cooler for the dough.

How about a different 120mm fan? The standard one bundled with the Scythe is pretty poor really.

Can anyone recommend a better one? How can I get the revs above 1200rpm?

ive got the ninja and im also having problems with my temps the fan that came with it was not very comfortable to install tbh and my rpm is low too, i think thats probably your problem although i have a 8800 card as well so this could be causing bad airflow?

seen a few of these temp problems related to scythe ninjas now am considering binning it haha

Oh poop, I've got one of these arriving tomorrow, I did order an xtra fan to go with it though. How come it gets such good results in cooler roundups?

Well I'm pretty sure its down to poor airflow through my case.

Chapparal's suggestion of removing the side of the case confirmed it as the idle temps immediately dropped. Stress temps were 20C lower!

I reckon its down to the size of the 8800GTS and the heat it is itself creating.

The back of the case where the GFX card is fixed gets pretty hot too!

Can anyone recommend a good GFX card cooler too please?

The Thermalright HR-03-PLUS is meant to be a very good 8800gts/gtx cooler providing you have the room in your case. Take a look at http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17717026 for a few reviews of it from people off here.
I would use riva tuner first though before rushing into anything.
It allows you to set the fan speed on your 8800 to 100% all of the time which will cool it down a fair bit so your be able to get a rough idea of just how much your 8800 is to blame for your high temps.

Swiftech Apex Ultra + EK 8800GTS full cover block and a decent air cooler for the northbridge, a water block will just kill the flow rate and not offer any advantage over something like the Extreme Spirit 2, noctua NU-6 etc.

if ** thinking about water. with the heat the 8800's pushout. dual rad will do but for optimal a treb would be better
D-TEK FuZion CPU Block wish i got 1 instead of the DD tdx. might sill do yet tho
