e6600 hit a wall

Hi guys, this is my first visit to the forum, I hope someone can help me :)

This is my first attempt at overclocking, and as you can see from the screenshot everything looks ok.

When I up the FSB to around 1185, my pc won't start up. So I upped the volts to 1.475, and the CPU was idling at around 40degrees, it then BSOD'ed after a while.

Then I tried lowering the multiplier to 8 and setting the FSB to 1190. PC wouldn't start, lowered to 1185 and it started but BSOD'ed after a while once again.

Hopefully someone can shed some light as to why this is happening, keeping in mind I am a complete beginner at OC'ing.

SPECS:

Intel C2D e6600
P5N SLI-e
Not too sure what RAM make is, 2gb is all I know.

Have you unlinked the memory? Might be best to unlink it and set it to 533mhz til you find out it's rated speed.
 
Screenshot of your Memory and SPD tabs in cpuz?

In the bios try running the ram unlinked as suggested that way you can determine whether your memory is preventing you clocking higher.
 
Are you sure your board is an Asus P5N SLI-e and not a P5N-E SLi?

Either way you'll have to drop your memory divider to 1:1 as it's running faster than your FSB and is probably hitting its wall.

You are running your memory out of spec as im assuming you have not upped the voltage or changed the timings at all?

You will need to unlink the memory and manually set the timings.

In the bios perform these steps to set them. (This is from memory from OC'ing my asus board which is similar to yours.

1. In FSB Memory Config there should be an option to run your ram in linked/unlinked mode. Set this to unlinked and then set the DDR to 800Mhz

2. In the overclocking menu go to memory timings and set the first 4 options from auto to 4,4,4,12 in descending order.

3. In the overvoltage tab set your momery voltage from auto to 2.1v or +0.3v

Save and reboot.

This should run your memory at its correct rated speeds and allow you to push past that wall.

The asus boards are a bit strange with regards to memory ratios. If i remember correctly if you select 1:1 it will try and run the ram at the quad pumped QFSB you need to select "sync mode" to run it at the rated FSB?

I'm sure this is what I did with the same board some while back, I play with so many I can't remeber for sure though.
 
That's grand :)

Providing it's now unlinked it shouldn't be holding back your CPU clock anymore.
 
yep that looks much better. Still on a 3:4 divider tho so if you start pushing the FSB quite high then you will need to either unlink the memory or slacken the timings and put a few more volts through it.
 
Idle temps mean very little.

Try to keep the Prime95/Orthos load temp below 70c if possible.
