Just wondering whether anyone knows if the above pair are compatible. They are same socket (775), hence me buying the upgrade for my missus pc. I'm assuming that all socket 775 mobos are compatible with all 775 cpu's - is that correct?

Cheers

No it is'nt correct. All 775 mobo's will not take all 775 cpu's. In your case though both are compatible. Which E6600? The old 65nm Core2Duo or the new 45nm Pentium dual core? If it's the new one you will need to flash to bios 1203 or later.

In other words = DOH!!! Never flashed bios before and don't think I would want to risk it on my missus pc as too much precious stuff (kids pictures etc) on there. Is there a straight forward, risk free way of doing this?

:)

BIOS flash is never risk free but the easiest way of doing it is to use the ASUS update utility. Dos based flash is still recommended but I've used the utility before and it worked a treat, you just won't be able to downgrade again is all.

thats not a problem, if their precious they'll be backed up already....won't they ? ;)

as mentioned i use the windows program, load into safe mode run it and be patient.

flashing is easy you can do it with a program in windows.

That's two duff bits of advice you have given in one thread.

Asus windows bios flashing software is notoriously bad and has left many people with a useless board.

OP. Download the latest bios and put it on a USB stick. On bootup hit Alt + F2 and flash using EZ-Flash.

+1 another one as well. pastymuncher, he wise.

Yep, +1 for EZ flash, some unfortunate fella on here flashed a new x58 board in windows and killed the board, done it myself once on an A8N SLI board, learned the hard way.:(

Thanks for the advice chaps. Will try EZ Flash in bios then. I assume when I access it, it is fairly idiot proof as it will need to be :D. I'm an old hat at overclocking but this seems like a dark science to me
