Pah! Intel PIII 400, Voodoo2 SLi [2*12Mb] and 256Mb RAM. Now THAT was a top gaming rig. And yes, I still play Q2 over the LAN with my nephew. It's a classic.

I can remember everyone going with Sli Voodoo2s and getting made fps and then one of the boys in our clan splashed out on a Riva TNT2 32mb (32mb!)......man, how envious were we - he was getting great visuals and killing our fps stats....oh how times change......

The other thing that came around at the same time as the fps-race in Q2, was the emergence of the LPB/HPB divide - I can remember some classic arguements over that! Ahhh, the good old days......

errrr.......apologies for derailing........

I solved the pc probe II problem. Speedfan does not report the same 256c abonrmal results occasionally. I am getting 52c with dual prime at 3001mhz, fsb333, memory running at 833 5-5-5-15-2t. I am really pleased with the result as the PC is running and seems to be completely stable and yet it is bearly audible above the ambient noise in the room. (Ninja plus cooler, P180 case with fans set to low). :D
I only get the 256C warnings if I open cpu-z. Just put it together properly yesterday. On prime at the moment.

Dual sp2004 15hrs+ so far, 3.5GHz 44C mem 1:1 4-4-4-12.
Pi 1M @ 3.6Ghz 14.078s
Pi 32M @3.6GHz 14m 39.172s

I remember breaking 100fps before anyone else in my clan. The stella that was consumed that night!!! Those were the days.

That's where I'm at. Got everything but the board. My problem is I have one eye on Vista, Crysis and Flight SimX. I need a MB that has 3 PCI-E slots and supports both Crossfire and SLi because I won't know which way I'm going until DX10 cards come out and they get compared. Third slot is for a physics card as it's the way it seems to be going. Also needs to support quad core, still have IDE for the optics and also clock well.

Christ I'm fussy.

The Intel 'Bad Axe' D975XBX satisfies all of your criteria :) I picked one up at the weekend and it is fantastic. Three 16x PCIe slots (first is 16x/8x electrical, second is 8x electrical and the third is 4x electrical), only one PATA IDE connector, so you can only connect two optical devices but wasn't a problem for me.

It also clocks really well and gives you full BIOS adjustments for CPU volts, FSB frequency (upto 50% over default) etc. You may have to solder two points to get the full range of adjustments for non-XE Core2Duo CPU's (I did and it was pretty easy), otherwise you can just use the Intel BIOS editor to change the values and then flash away.

I'd missed that one. I've checked out the specs and it certainly covers all my requirements. I'm hesistant to buy though knowing there's two new chipsets around the corner but the reality is I doubt they offer any more other than maybe better layout or cooling perhaps. Decisions!!!

I am glad I brought up quake 2 now! I don't feel so alone - obviously quite a few of you have been at this as long as I have! :D
I've been gaming since Sinclair ZX81. Now 33 and lashing out on a new Conroe system getting ready for the onslaught of the latest.

Fair enough. what gpu u using? - mine was an x1800xt.

Mine is a 7600GT. It was pretty funky watching it blur past in less than a second :p

Q2 should be a valid benchmark :D . Hmm, I wonder what happens if I run Doom 1 on this rig..

Remember way back when we played 3d monster maze and sabotage. Oooh how my rampack wobbled back then...

The stock is the bit I'm having an issue with at the moment. I don't want to order it and find there are 4000 people in the que before me. ;)

According to the website the 6600's are "In Stock".
There is no queue of people, everyone who has been waiting for one has had it shipped.
You just go to the site, order it and one will be taken off the shelf and sent straight out.
Order today, sent out Citylink NextDay - you should be looking at it in your hands by 5:00pm tomorrow at the latest.

Wrong. Still waiting on my Pre-order  Hasn't even been printed yet.

If that is the case call them up and ask them why they are listing them as "in stock"!
There are enough retailers out there that actually do have stock that I just assumed the "Green Circle" on the main site was indicating free stock.
If OcUK aren't currently holding stock do a little shopping around and you will find them.
I did use OcUK and got mine last Friday.
Friend of mine used somewhere else yesterday and it arrived this morning.

They have them in stock alright, they said they won't ship until royal mail stop ****** up deliveries (I'm in Ireland, + don't think citylink do international, or do they?)

Either way i'm royally ******. Think i'm the last pre-order in Europe who hasn't got theirs yet
