E6600 OC @ 3.2 against a new E5200 upgrade

Hi everyone,

Just bought an E5200 for an upgrade for two PCs. My workhorse/best spec is running E6600 OC @ 3.2 and is running fine...do I swap them over? Will the E5200 beat the 3.2 OC?
The high spec PC is having a new XFX ATI Rad HD 4850 XXX edition with VGA cooler (thermalright T-Rad2) and a new corsair HX620W modular power supply. The higher spec pc keeps the Akasa Evo blue heatsink and all sits on a GA-EP45-DS5 gigabyte MOBO. What do you think, keep the e6600 where it is or move the new e5200 in? Thanks for any suggestions/advice in advance.

PS All bought on Overclockers at a good price and delivered on time...now will it fly better?

You will get more Ghz from the E5200, at least 3.6+, but i doubt you would notice any real difference. In fact the core 2 chip would run faster in certain apps no matter what just because of it's make up.

Read this thread as the guy clocks both chips and compares results. It will probably answer all the questions you could ever ask about the subject.

It's certainly not a move i would make. The E6600 has double the cache for a start and there is no certainty that you will get a E5200 clocked high enough to make any difference. Can't you get your E6600 any higher. Most should be able to do 3.4-3.6Ghz.

Dont do it, all that faffing about changing CPU's for no reason really.

I moved from a 3.2GHz E6600 to a 4GHz E8500 and their certainly is not a massive difference, infact probably not a noticable difference apart from in benchmarks. I'd save the hassle and only change chips when you have a worthwhile upgrade.

Hey Thx Folks for the input. You helped me make a choice and I am going to keep the E6600 . Pastymuncher you state 3.4-3.6Ghz. with the E6600 I'll get back to you on that one in the near future. I'm not too happy about my temp. Core temp 54 and 47c @ 97% 70% load respectfully. Akasa Evo blue heatsink is such a pain to get on and off on this MOBO. Copper pipes restrict access tightening the screws. (I have a gut feeling that it is not sitting as it should. Anyway thx again.

Willhub the ink was still drying and you was on the case with a reply. Thx. Here are the settings this was given to me by Oldphart in reply to OCing the E6600. ( I got to nip out for an hour so will not be able to reply for a short while. )

BIOS SETTINGS - 3.2GHZ.

CPU HOST CLOCK - ENABLED.

CPU CLOCK RATIO - 8x.

CPU HOST FREQ - 400.

PCI EXP FREQ - 101.

PERFOROMANCE ENHANCE - STANDARD.

SYSTEM MEMORY MULTI - 2.00D.

DRAM TIMING (SPD) - MANUAL.

CAS LATENCY TIME - 5.

TRCD - 5.

TRP - 5.

TRAS - 18.

CPU Vcore - 1.37500v - set at this because of volt drop.
[factory setting -1.325]

DRAM VOLTAGE - 2.080v.

CPU Vcore - 1.37500v

DRAM VOLTAGE - 2.080v.

1.37V for CPU is quite good, for 3.4GHz I needed 1.47V so maybe try 3.4GHz with 1.4V first, should deffo be able to push that CPU maybe even above 3.4GHz.

Your TRAS could do to be lowered to 15 too, I assume the ram is running at 800MHz? If so depending on your ram it's either 5-5-5-15 or 4-4-4-12.

Nothing wrong with those settings. 54 degrees at load is'nt too bad although the Akasa Evo was'nt that good a cooler anyway. To get the best out of it you have to run the fan fast and then it was loud. Frostytech did a review on it and were unimpressed. You could go and get a new cooler that uses a 120mm fan. I am sure some of the guys can recommend you a decent air cooler. What case do you have?
