Hi guys,

As the Conroe will be out soon I am getting ready to buy it, though I will probably wait till next month, assuming the items in my spec drop in price alittle!

Though my question is this, unless the Conroe's price drop, is the extra £135 +VAT worth the extra 0.27Ghz?

- Thanks

When I cross over to the Conroe in a few months, I will be buying the E6600. I think it's outstanding value for money and I have already seen the results posted by members like Easyrider that are getting 3.6Ghz on Air. That will do me!!! :p

If you're going to overclock then there's no point in paying that much more for a small increase in clock speed that you can achieve easily for free with little or not impact on stability, heat and power consumption. From what I've read anyway, the E6600 overclocks equal to or better than the E6700.

The only circumstances where I would purchase the E6700 is if I had cash to burn, or I didn't want to overclock at all and thought the extra clock speed will help out noticeably with my usage of the system.

Remember, the E6600 and above have double the L2 cache too, will can come into its own doing things that need a lot of onboard cache.

Games ,encoding, video work can never have enough cache lol :D

The extra cache will have little to no effect in games especially if your gpu bound and at best for other things <10%. I never saw any real world difference between the 512 & 1MB A64's unless you liked playing PI

However its looking like the lesser 2MB's may overclock far more than the 4MB's. I suspect things may get very interesting if your prepared to overclock

The cache question has been answered and doesn't make a great deal of difference.
If you look around there was at least one test where an X6800 is run on a lower multiplyer so that it runs at the same speed as the 6300 - just with obviously twice as much cache.
Hardly made the slightest difference.

10% increase in encoding and a higher multi in the 6600 is worth it for 100 quid more in book.

More chance of getting to the upper 3ghz mark too over the 6300 and 6400.
However having said that at 135 the 6300 is a fantastic buy but if I had gone for one I know would be wanting at least the 6600

So would it be hard to clock a 6300 to 6600 speeds? I was thinking of getting a 6600 but not overclocking it, but the 6300 does seem to be a bit of a bargain! Also, what sort of improvement can I expect over my athlon sd 3700+?

I would have though that getting a 6300 to run at 2.4ghz would be very easy indeed. 7x 343 shouldn't be a problem.

Also 2.8ghz would not be to much trouble I would have thought.

The improvement over your 3700 will be staggering :D

However I too am torn between the 6600 & 6700 - not just because of the Cache situation.
But they've both got 4MB L2 Cache? Its the next one down (the E6400) that has 2MB L2 Cache.

Yer - I appreciate that.
I was always going to get one of the 4mb cache versions (even though I've posted about it not making much of a difference :) )
The upgrade I'm about to make is going to be the last one for a little while so I'm really buying on the clocked speed rather than other features.
Yer so Conroe is supposed to overclock well - I just tend to run mainly at stock myself.

Yeah that's fair enough. I understand your plight - I've not personally overclocked since my days with an AMD Duron.

In this case however it seems perfectly fine to do at least a mild overclock on the Conroe. There's absolutely no trade-off from what info I've seen thus far.

Also think about it another way. The saving you making by purchasing the E6600 instead of the E6700 can go towards upgrading another part of your system e.g. a larger LCD is always a nice thing to go for. Maybe a raptor instead of a regular 7200 rpm hdd. Or just bank the savings for a DX10 card later in the year.
