E6600 Strangeness

I was just about to try putting my FSB up a bit as my first test of very basic overclocking, but before i've even done anything i checked CPU-Z to get the stats and for some reason the core speed is only 1600mhz! The multiplier is down to 6 when it was 9 (it seemed to jump between 9 and 6 for a bit but has now relaxed on 6), FSB is 266.7 mhz at the moment, i can't remember the original but i think it's different too. I last checked CPU-Z last week and it seemed to be giving the right values, just before opening it this time i downloaded and ran SuperPi. Any idea why this has happened?

[EDIT] Just tried running Counter-Strike Source and it still seems to be churning the same FPS, is this a CPU-Z problem maybe? Guess i should check the multiplier etc in the bios.

There's three settings you have to disable - SpeedStep, EIST and another one that I've forgotten.

It really shouldn't be a problem though. Run Orthos or another demanding app and you should see the speed jump to 2.4.

Ah thanks for that, i found the other topic after you mentioned it, i can't believe i never thought of searching beforehand. I tried running a CPU intensive program and it jumped back up, thanks for the information, at least i know it's nothing wrong with my kit. I'll disable these for now.

Also, would i be able to simply push the fsb up to force the processor to 2.6ghz without having to adjust anything else?

I'm just trying the simple overclock without flashing the bios for now incase i bugger anything up. I have a Gigabyte 965P-DS3P rev 3.3, i disabled thermal monitor, EIST and C1E, turned CPU host clock control on and changed the system voltage to auto. The strange thing is in CPU-Z it had my FSB as normal - 266.7mhz but in the bios it said 200mhz, anyway to be safe i upped this by 5mhz and CPU-Z is seeing this right at 1845mhz, but obviously i wanted to go up not down, should i change the FSB to 270mhz (5mhz above default), would this be safe?

K, i set the FSB to 270mhz and saved, it just went to a black screen, so i restarted and it loaded to windows fine, checked CPU-Z and it returned the default CPU settings, so i went back into the bios to see what was happening and it had disable the CPU host clock control, so i reenabled it and tried again and it worked and is showing the right speed. I guess the 200mhz was maybe a fail safe frequency the motherboard sets for when you have the host control on, but when it's off it just configures it automatically. Anyway i'll do some testing and stuff.

I've pushed only my FSB up to 348mhz at the moment, is it fine to leave my FSB on this with the multiplier on 9x so my clock speed is 3.1ghz? My ram can handle 400mhz. I've only just turned my computer on and started to test it and it's giving temperatures of 50-55ºc.

Thats pretty good, run Orthos etc to make sure its stable and ideally you want to stay under 60c on load.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. I'm running Folding @ Home at the moment and it's maintaining the temperatures, i haven't downloaded Orthos yet, it's something i plan on doing, but some reason i have a feeling it's not going to like Vista x64! Is it ok if my memory frequency is 522mhz, they are 800mhz sticks, but i guess they can handle the extra, afterall that's what overclocking's about?

[EDIT] This is using Speedfan however and i heard it underreads the temperatures. Unfortunately Core temp and Intels TAT don't work on my OS
