just built new rig (see sig) and using speedfan and coretemp, idle temps are about 33c, after playing a game for a few minutes they shoot into the high 40's
system is at stock speed with the stock hsf. is this a little on the high side.

That is very good. At idle when i had my stock cooler on my e6600 i had 47C
 
Idle temps i dont take any notice off, its the loads temps i keep an eye out for and mine fully loaded using orthos goes to about 48/49c on each core and thats overclocked to 3.2GHz but i have an aftermarket cooler and extremely good air flow.
 
thanks for the replies, seems i may have been worrying a little to much, this is my first ever intel rig so i wasnt sure what temps are the norm for them.
