E6600 to 3ghz problems

Hi all

I having some problems overclocking my E6600 to 3ghz. I've managed to get it to 2.8 stable, temps are 50C load using Orthos for an hour - both cores 100%, vcore was 1.34v at max. So I was happy to try and move up to 3ghz.

So I upped my FSB from 320(x9) to 333(x9) and the BIOS would not post. Anybody any ideas why? I'm quite new to this overclocking lark so I'm sure its probably something daft I'm doing wrong. Could it be a lack of voltage due to having voltages set to AUTO in the BIOS?

I have my BIOS set as follows:

* CPU:Memory - 1:1
* All voltages I have set to AUTO.
* My RAM settings are 4-4-4-12 so I have added those timings to the BIOS. (My RAM is GeIL PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2).

System spec:
* E6600 with AC Freezer 7 Pro
* Abit AW9D MAX
* 4gb GeIL RAM (see above)
* 8800GT
* 3xHDDs
* 1xDVDRW
* LianLi V2000 case with 4xcase fans.
* BFG 800W PSU

My E6600 is quite a hungry beast and I am running about 1.435v through it, I think!
This gives me a stable OC @ 9x400 or 8x425 (multiXfsb)

Have you set your RAM voltage in the bios? You have the same as me and you need to set it in the bios for a stable OC.

I was running 1.475vCore on my Asus P5W to get 380fsb. My IP35 is better!

Thanks for the hints guys. No I haven't set the RAM voltage in the BIOS, from reading your previous post phunky phish you have it set to 2.2v - should I set it to that in the BIOS and maybe try my vcore at 1.4v to see if it posts then try lowering the vcore until it won't post? Does that sound feasible?
 
You need to set the ram voltage mate, but check what it is which should be written on its packaging. They list it as 1.9v-2.3v on here, so maybe set it to 2.1v.

And you can try setting it straight up to 1.4v then slowly lowering it. Most people start low then up it!

I would start by setting your ram to 2.1v, cpu to 1.35v
Then your cpu multi to 9x and your fsb to 300
I would then start windows and make sure it loads. If fine up fsb by 20 and do again. Keep doing this untill windows wont load. Then either start upping the voltage untill windows loads, or lower the fsb back by 20 and restart, then up in intervals of 5. It depends if you are happy with the speed when it fails, or you want more!
Once you have got an oc that you are happy with and boots into windows then you need to stress test it. If it fails you will need to lower the fsb or up the voltage again!

There is a good sticky at the start on how to get a stable oc, but thats how I work!

OK, after some fiddling around and following some of the advice here, I'm now running my E6600 at 3ghz and stable after 3 hours of orthos (I'll do a longer test sometime over the weekend). Temps are good (32C idle, 54C load). I've set my RAM to the specified 2.1v and have my cpu vcore set at 1.3125v in the BIOS. Under load CPU-Z goes up to core volts 1.340v max. Sorry for a noob question but if i've set my vcore to 1.3125v why does it seem to go over this to 1.340v??

Does all this sound ok to you guys?

Anyway, I'm really pleased ... 25% extra speed for nowt is good as far as I'm concerned!

Hopefully someone here will tell you why the Vcore has gone up, as I always thought it droop'd!
But some more modern boards have some stuff to help combat this.

I think you should up the Vcore and get her higher mate :D

I would aim for 3.4GHz with a nice high fsb.
 
congrats i have the same board as you :) but an e6700. i overclocked mine keeping cpu volatge at stock. i only had to increase ram voltage to make it stable. @3.3ghz. i havent tried to push it higher but i know that it will go as there are still lots of thing i can do. im saving the higher overclock for when i ever decided my pc is slow........long way off :)
