E6600 to a QX9650

Just a little warning, i recently went to upgrade 2 machines with those boards with Q9550 cpus, both rev 3.3, one took it and one would not boot with more than 1 stick of RAM, no matter how i swapped RAM/cpus etc.. BIOS was the latest on both, had to drop in a Q6700 instead in that one rig. Also don't look for any big clocks with those boards and any Quad tbh. So even though technically its unofficially supported, it still may not work.

Your board isn't that great for clocking quads you need a p35 or p45 chipset board to get the best from 775 quads, if I were in your position I would sell your cpu board and ram and put the money towards a second hand socket 1156 core i5 750/760 board and ddr3 there's no value in sandybridge even second hand obviously as it's new but the core i5 quads are decently priced second hand. You could get a core i5 750/760 and 2x2gb ddr3 and board for around £130-£145 so not far off the £90 ish you are thinking of spending once you sold your current board ram and cpu.People might scoff and say sell and go 2500k but it's too expensive an upgrade path the value is in second hand 1156 stuff now.

You need to get that post count up so you gain access to the members market here.
