E6600 to E8400???

Currently running:

E6600 @ 3.2 (stock volts)
4gb GeiL 6400
GA P35c DS3R

Looking to upgrade at the end of May and seen the E8400's as a good chip to move on too. Although i've had no confirmation that's what i should do and why i'm making this thread.

I don't edit movies or pics that much, if ever, so find a Qcore a bit excessive.

My mobo can take the new 45mn chips and i thought the E8400 at £150 would be a wise move, especially if i can get £50 for my E6600.

I use my computer for games mainly, and i've not a massive overclocker, in fact the 3.2 on my E6600 was my 1st time, i'm hoping for an easy ride on this one as well. 4ghz mark sounds tasty, is it easy as they say to achieve?

I'd recommend it.

I've had an e2160 @ 3.6ghz, e6300 @ 3.3ghz and 3x e6600 all at 3.4-3.7ghz.

All took work to achieve but the e8500 (£160 2nd hand) i have now was just easy.

Running a stable 3.8ghz @ 1.26v and it flies. Looking to go 4ghz+ just want to watercool my northbridge first! :)

the NB get hot like?

Thats a low voltage as well.

So this is my path then? I think it is. Q's are still not for me really if i am just gaming.
 
Ah they run hot? So my P35 shouldn't need any extra NB cooling.

Hoping to get 4ghz out of this, nothing more, but nothing less or its not worth the £100 jump imo.
 
Can't you clock the E6600 any further? I would have thought 3.6Ghz would be easy enough. You are not going to see that much of a difference. I breifly had a E8500 before i got this E6600 and have run benchies on both. With the E8500 clocked to 4.2Ghz (did'nt bench any lower) and the E6600 at 3.6Ghz her are some comparisons for you:-

E8500=14044

E6600=22968
E8500=24500

E6600=42697
E8500=44358

E6600=63217
E8500=74384

Aquamark3
E6600=204951
E8500=241478

Apart from the last two there is very little difference. Gaming showed an unnoticeable increase with the E8500 but the only game i got to try with it was Crysis before i got rid of it. Personally i would stick with the E6600 and try to clock it further. Nehalem will be out at the end of the year and be bringing with it a new socket. That will be my next upgrade, unless AMD can bring something faster than Intel along, which would seem highly unlikely.

The chip does 3.6 with a voltage increase, but i've never tried it. (2nd hand chip bought from here)

So you reckon just get it to 3.6 and not bother until xmas for an upgrade?

Yep. Nothing wrong with a 3.6Ghz E6600. It's a good cpu. Mine was second hand as well. ;)
 
The E8400 is a nice processor, and very easy to get a good o/c out of, I run mine @4.2GHz with 1.4v as seen in cpu-z, will also bench @4.5GHz with 1.440v in cpu-z, using it on a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P....:)
 
Did INTEL fix the faulty core readings on the Wolfdales yet? or did I read that wrong?

I'm an overcooler so enjoy tracking my temps but a lot of people have grumbled about the core readings being all over the place?
