Hiya,

Having just got back from overseas and blown the dust of my desktop that has been in storage for the past couple of years, I am trying to decide whether to upgrade it now or to wait until the Haswell chips are out. I'd pretty much need everything new, although it's got a 5850 in at the moment which could stay as I only play a bit of League of Legends and no FPS's, although wouldn't say no to the new starcraft 2 addon :D

So, do I get an i5 3570k now, or wait for haswell.... Any advice please :D

Cheers

eh, don't know how I missed the thread a couple of lines below mine :/ sorry!

still, any specific advice appreciated, cheers

If ya not playing any new games yet ide just hang on, upgrade when ya wanna do summat on ya computer that it cant handle, i was on the same cpu as you with a couple of 8800s and stayed on it for 6 years cause i really only played wow, but with some new great fps games coming out this year i needed an update.

Also worth noting is that the current 1155 is a dead platform as fare as i know. Where the new socket haswell is coming out on will most likely get atleast 1 more update to it.

hmm, yeah. Although reading around it seems that even if haswell is 10-15% faster, the most significant thing is the upgraded on-board graphics, which would be unused in a desktop...

I'm in no real hurry to upgrade so I think you're all right in saying to wait, maybe ivy bridge prices will fall even more :D

Cheers

Yup according to rumored release dates its in June/July, would be ideal to wait.

If not there are plenty of Core i7 2500k/2600k/3570 + bundles on the cheap on members market...

I recently moved from a E6700 (3.2ghz dual core) to a z77 IB (3570k oc'd to 4.4) Its worth EVERY penny, Haswell brings a new socket and about 10% difference (rumored) between the 3570k but really will you notice if you have been on an old core duo along time?

Paired it with :OCZ vertex 3, Asrock z77 extreme 4 and 8gb of corsair vengance(C9 1600mhz)while still using my GTS 450 1gb my gaming/general computer use has been vastly improved (For some reason its boosted my gpu or feels like it, im able to run on high-ultra and have super smooth fps eg: BF3 @ ultra and 8x AA = 55-60fps)

One thing to note if you can wait for 4 months when haswell comes out watch the price drop hard on all the IB and "old sockets" ;)

And my new set up is "future proof" or theoretically able to last 5 years with a GPU update in the future possibly to a 670
Example: People still using the i7 920 @4-4.5 are still going great and only a few have the itch to upgrade simply to have something new to play with not for any real world performance gains
