Hi there,

Gots an E6600 and want to upgrade to quad. Finally decided on the Q6600 instead of the Q9450 mainly due to the prices and the fact that the Q6600 will clock better on a P35 board... I believe.

Thing is this, I have 2GB of DDR2 RAM lying around, a spare case & PSU. If I upgrade to a quad I will have everything for a decent-ish PC bar the mobo.

What mobo could I get to whack the E6600 on at around 3GHZ? Im thinking as cheap as possible with maybe a GFX card but will consider on-board.

Im thinking Q6600 + mobo for under £180... hint the reason I think on-board GFX will hbe mentioned. Also I would like the board to support a quad up to 3.6ghz in case I buy a Q9450 later on down the line.

Cheers very much, Doug.

if you consider that below is the cheapest you will get a quad and a MB for, without going for b-grade/clearance, i think you need to increase your budget a bit

however im not sure if it will support a q6600 if you need it to in the future though

personally i say get a p35 based MB such as the abit IP35 or a p31 based MB such as the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 with a cheap GFX

I'm slightly unsure about whether you want the motherboard for a second PC or if you actually want it for your main PC. Going for it as a second PC option, the cheapest motehrboard that should pretty much guarantee 3ghz+ from the E6600 is the Gigabyte P31 DS3L and you'd still need a graphics card of some sort.

If you want a motherboard with onboard graphics then you basically need to pick an mATX motherboard but you lose out on some overclocking ability and you still can't pick one up from OcUK and the Q6600 for under £180. The CPU is £140 on it's own and motherboards start from ~£50.

Cheers for the replies guys.

Basically I want to upgrade my current CPU from an E6600 to a Q6600 and use the E6600 in another PC.

I have all the parts bar the mobo and gfx and was hoping someone could steer me in the direction of a verrrry cheap mobo + gfx card or mobo with on-board gfx.

I think i'll just upgrade my CPU and wait until I have more money or sell all the bits to re-coup on the cost of the Q6600.

It's mainly for Distributed Computing anywho :D

Cheers, Doug.

Edit: Where'd my sig go?
