Hi there,

Its upgrade time for me and i am wondering which route to go down.

I like the look of the i7 setups but its too much for me to swap out so im sticking to the 775tech for now and on that note i have a gigabyte p35c ds3r so i'm going to upgrade the memory as well to the highest supporting DD3, which is 1333fsb so thinking:

I've got the E6600 under a mild overclock, for me means no extra volts and running happily at 3.2ghz. Gaming would probably be the main use of the computer bar general net browsing, i also use it for Macromedia style stuff and could be using some more advance packages in the future.

I'm thinking of an E8500 (as the price jump to E8600 doesn't seem financially viable) and would want to get that to the 4ghz mark, without too much mad overclocking. I do have decent air cooling in a Noctua NH-U12P which keeps my current setup under 45c under max load.

The other option is to go quad core for around the same price mark £150-200, meaning the 9550 and i would be hoping for around 3.5ghz out of that without huge overclocking....what does everyone think? Which route do i go down and are my expectations too high of the chips in OC mode?

Thanks for looking

Dokko :)

You are not going to get as big a boost as you may think. See my cpu comparison thread here. The gains beyond 3.6Ghz get smaller and smaller too. If your E6600 does 3.2Ghz with no voltage increase then it should be capable of at least 3.6Ghz. I would clock it further and bide your time until you are ready to change to i5/i7 or AM3. Even the price of the E8500 is'nt worth the extra over the E8400. The prices these days are ridiculous. It was only a couple of months ago that i paid £140 for my E8500!!

Thanks for the feedback.

What about the mem upgrade and overclock the CPU a bit more, you think that would be a good idea?

Im itching to do some upgrading as unnecessary as it might be.

My other option is upgrading my CPU in my laptop from a T8100 to a T9500 or an X9000 for around £200-250.

Got a 8800GTX in the lappy but feel the CPU is limiting.

Don't think i would bother upgrading anything yet.

You should get a bit more out of your E6600, will need a better cooler if you are still using the stock intel one.

If you have to get something, maybe a ATI 4870/4890 1gb. At least you can carry this over to a new rig later.

As for the memory, i believe you only need PC2-6400 for a overclock of 3.6.
