Guys I just wanted to ask by how much can I overclock my conroe 2.4 e6600 chip so that it's still reliable and doesn't crash, also what motherboard would be a good choice to invest in in order to do this, I'm after the cheapest choice but must be reliable!

I got slightly better benchmark results running at 450x8 compared to 400x9. The extra FSB and RAM speed helps a little.

Also whats a good and cheap cooling fan and what PSU would you reccomend, I've seen a 600 watter "value" one for £20, will this do or do I need one of these pay through the nose "GamerExtreme" type things that cost mega bucks

If that price isn't off OCUK then I'd get rid of it, I don't think we're allowed to talk about competition or their prices even generically.

Generic fans are often cheapest - I'm not sure OCUK sell any value fans (only the good **i*). A value PSU will probably work, the downsides are:

It could take the rest of your system with it if it fails
It's more likely to fail
You won't get as much power out of it
You won't get as much of the type power you need (12v rail) out of it
Your electricity bills will be higher
Your overclock probably won't go as high - Type R for example overvolt 12v rail and all the expensive supplies will offer a more steady feed (although I don't think there is a huge difference to the OC)
It looks tacky

PSUs are like breaks in cars, you don't skimp on them!

You'd be a fool to let your pc be run by an El Cheapo PSU, they are cheap for a reason. Two/three months down the line *POOF* there go's your pc.
A branded PSU is needed from 550watts upwards.
Seasonic for instance.
I really don't know why people buy these expensive componants then stick a crappola PSU in.

[Edit] Beaten by seconds :o :D

This doesn't happen nearly as much as people on these forums like to pretend. I have never known anyone to have their kit die from a PSU stopping. I've run PCs on cheap PSUs for years, I even had an old one that whined and clicked when the wires hit the fan blades that my mate gave me as an "interim" PSU - I ran it for a year before another mate gave me a higher wattage PSU.

Yes, cheap PSUs can take your kit out, and might fail after 3 months. No, they probably won't fail within a year, and probably won't take your kit out if they do.

Say that to a mate of mine when his PSU went with a bang & blue flash which took out his motherboard & cpu.
Q-TEC urgh!
PSU is most important part of the pc, don't skimp.

I'd be happy to. Perhaps you could just forward my post along with my condolances for his loss.

As a final note, one thing you really shouldn't do is leave a cheap psu unattended... even if the PC is off.

What about the CPU fan, do I just use the standard one that comes with the chip or go for the ninja scythe and would I need the optional fan for that.

Please keep in mind I intend to keep my system for at least a few years and want to RELIABLY overclock to about 3.5ghz

3.5ghz, gonna need the best tbh.

TT120, Ninja are the best :)

I have a TT120 @ 1200RPM (1000-2100 range) and its keeping my CPU at 52C orthos load (48-50C gaming + Folding load) :)

CPU being a E6600 @ 3.525ghz at 1.505V
