Hi,

I bought my new system from overclockers about 4 months ago, but I hadn't yet looked into overclocking or temps at all, I just figured they'd be fine as I have a Noctua NH-U12F on an E6750 @ 2.66GHz. I managed to overclock to 3.2GHz without much of a problem but I don't need the extra speed at the moment, so went back to stock. Temps @ 3.2 were reaching about 60 deg C (Core temps under load) and then levelling off, though it didnt seem to be throttling. However, i've found at 2.66 the temperatures are much the same under load, and my machine is at about 40 deg idle (both cores). This is a little hotter than I would have expected, any ideas what might be wrong? Here's the setup:

E6750 @ 2.66GHz with Noctua NH-12UHF
GA-P35C-DS3R (rev1.1) F10
2 x 1GB GeIL 6400 Ultra
BFG 8800GTS 320mb OC2
250GB WD SATA-II
Corsair HX 620W PSU
Akasa Zen white case (2 x 120mm 1 front, 1 back)

I used the supplied thermal paste for the cooler, and installation seemed fine, I have checked it since. The cooler isn't dusty either.

Could the case be to blame? The case temp is around 35 deg idle, maybe it is not enough to cool the GFX too? Recorded the temps with Speedfan, setup to add 15 deg to core temps, so those should be correct...

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, that's some useful info, I might invest in some Arctic Silver anyway before I go changing my case.

60C was fine, I agree, it was more the idle temps that were confusing, is 40C not a bit high?

Sorry if i'm being a bit naive, I was previously using a P4 Prescott @ 3GHz with a custom AMD hsf and getting 26C idle in the same case, and the hsf was nothing special. Oh, and i've tried coretemp with the same results, though I have vista 64 so its a pain to run it.

Core Temp reports the tjmax as 100C. Temps for both cores are 42C and 39C idle at the moment. Perhaps this difference between cores is indicative of a concave chip/heatsink problem as you suggested...

Ok, trying it now and the case temp is down to 28C and still going, cores down to 32C idle. Room is quite warm though. Think i'll check out the HSF whilst its open, perhaps re-seat it all. Thanks for your help

So now i've had the case off for a while, and the idle temperatures have gone down a fair bit:
Case 25C
Core 1 28C
Core 2 27C

This seems a lot better to me, though still high considering I have the side off an i'm not overclocked at all. I checked to see if the fan was blowing the right way, though it was hard to tell by feeling it. I swapped it around but it only made temps worse, so I think it was on correctly as I thought. I'll try upload a picture of the inside of the case, its fairly cramped I guess.

@Johnboyjoe

What case/HSF combo are you using there? Those sorta temps seem very low! I guess you must have a bigger case than me or live in an igloo.

here are some pics of the setup:

As you can see, its a bit cramped, but not too much in my opinion. Running like this, I get the temps mentioned above. Putting the side back on however can cause the temps to idle at 40C.

Noticed the GFX was running quite warm, this is likely to increase case temp, but I can't tell by how much.
