E6750 to quad core upgrade

Good afternoon everyone,

My girlfriend's PC is struggling with BF3, and I suspect it is the CPU holding it back as she has a 5870 which I picked up cheap recently to replace the 8800GT. These are the CPU and mobo that she has:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB)
MSI P35 Neo Combo (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard

I've read here: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P35-Neo-Combo.html#/?div=Basic that it supports quad core CPUs so which would be my best choice? Obviously the cheaper the better. I was aiming to pick up a Q6600 as I've heard these were a popular choice. There is Q8400 up in the MM at the moment though, am I right in thinking higher model number = better?! Or is it not that simple?

Also another potential issue is ram, it currently has 3GB, 1x1GB DDR2 stick of Giel ram and 1x2GB stick of Crucial ram. Hopefully this is sufficient for BF3? I guess I can get a new CPU first though and swap out the ram after if not.

Any help appreciated! Thanks for reading.

As mentioned 3GB, 1x1GB DDR2 stick of Giel ram and 1x2GB DDR2 stick of Crucial ram.

The game runs the same on high or low, frame rate is 40-60fps but every few seconds it lags with just a couple of frames per second. It definately isn't the GPU holding it back as I have the same one and I run everything high at 1920x1080 at 60+fps and she is only running at 1680x1050.

Up the RAM to 4gb if you can.

If the 5870 is fine for you, then I guess upgrading to a quad should help smooth things out. See if you can find a second hand Q6600?

Overclock, I wouldn't say BF3 doesn't need a CPU at all, the testing between 2/3/4 cores of an i7, is still an i7 which is significantly faster per core than a E6750, a 2600k is also 3.4Ghz stock with turbo, which is basically 50% faster than his dualcore.

But, a E6750 should really quite easily overclock beyond 3 Ghz, maybe up to 3.5Ghz, I'd think 3-3.2Ghz would be "easy" and that might just be enough of a difference.

If not, a cheapo dual/quad core phenom and cheapo mobo would probably do very well for an upgrade.

I too have the E6750 (overclocked to 3.4ghz) with 4gb of ram with a GTX460.
My processor is maxed with both low and high settings even though graphics is not getting maxed out.

The problem I have as we move into BF3 and the future is if actually my CPU is now getting eaten alive. All other games it runs high settings (apart from FIFA 12, another game that maxes out my CPU))

Puts me in an awkward position as don't really want to fork out hundreds to change my motherboard, CPU and memory for one game!?

I was of the same thinking last week, my e6850 lasted a long time but switching to an i5 didn't just improve performance in BF3, pretty much all the games i play have had a noticeable FPS boost.

What Gtx card have you got? I ain't long updated from 8800gt to my Gtx460 (overclocked)
I always get the upgrade bug but know now that if I do upgrade again will have to be the big 3 (board,CPU,memory)
Was going to wait for the next big step and try squeeze some more life out of my setup but now getting upgrade thoughts again!?

They do a £350 bundle for i5 on here, but then there's i7 at £500, so as ya see, it's hard to draw the line and don't want to be upgrading em all again in a few months. Though to be fair had my C2Duo a few years now!

Any big difference for gaming between i5 and i7 and what's other
Eoples thoughts?
I know not my thread but we both in same situation!?

Make sure the cooling is up to the job and overclock that Q6600 past 3ghz and BF3 should run fairly smoothly at sensible settings.

i too have an e6750

its def getting on abit

mine was struggling with starcraft 2 and i'm pretty sure bf3 is even more cpu intense

however when i clocked my e6750 to 3.5ghz and seem to be handling sc2 so far

quad is def the best bet! grab some cheap ram too!!!

I went from an E6400 to a Q6600 and it improved gaming hugely. It's worth-while doing if you plan on keeping your current set-up for a while longer yet, it's just much quicker in general.

Q6600 installed now and running at 3ghz stock volts. Improved BF3 no end, running well now. Still get very occasional stutter but so do I on my i7 rig so its more the game causing it now than anything!

Good stuff, I am just making the same move now. I am going from an E6600 to a Q6600 and hope it will improve BF3. Hopefully the Q6600 turns up tomorrow.

Cheers andy, the missus is well happy now, she even knifed me when we were put on the opposite teams, maybe I shouldn't have upgraded it after all...!

Good luck Porkie, it should hopefully give you a nice improvement.
