E6850 SpeedStep not going to 9x

I suspect that my E6850 is not working right...

Idling in windows, CPU-Z shows what I expect:

333 bus at 6x = 2,000Mhz

But I've tried running a game to put the CPU into proper speed, but this is all I get:

Thoughts?

It will only push it up to what it needs - maybe the game isn't really pushing it hard enough? Just a thought. Maybe try Orthos to really make it do some work.

And secondly, as Justin said, have you got it set to 8x in BIOS? Because SpeedStep won't take it higher than the core clock rate set in the BIOS.

I have a E6850, I though it was FSB that went up and down, Im sure the multi is locked, I have got Speedstep off but Im sure I cant get any lower multi to save and stay in bios, I know it cant be raised.

Its the CPU multi that gets dropped, therefore 'only' the CPU speed is affected.

You can manually lower the CPU multi on all Conroe chips. You can't put the chip multi up above its default except on extreme edition and engineering sample chips.

Is that a screenshot from dual-dispaly or?

Have u tried running Orthos to see if the chips speed increases to the max?

Locked upwards only. Think its 6 to 9x that are unlocked, FSB stays the same, only multi and vcore fluctuate, maybe you need a BIOS update or something.

Nope, all my ES Conroe chips were the same as the retail version, locked upwards.

Good to know but I'm sure there are a few unlocked engineering samples knocking about?

I may be mistaken though, it happens sometimes :)

Don't think so, they kept it just like the retails, the extreme ES were unlocked like the retail but everything else as just downwards unlocked like the rest.

Hmm bios seems to accept it and CPU-Z says its 8x multi or whatever I lower to, but Vista still see my overclock of previous 3800mhz so does Gadget I added to sidebar.

Vista and whatever are wrong, cpuz is right. The same thing happens with all core 2 cpus, Windows only sees the highest multi and times it by the FSB but it will actually be running at the lower multiplier in reality and no more.

For some reason by BIOS had set itself to limit the CPU to 8x, no idea why, but it was very easy to change (and yes, the range is 6-9).

Now I've set it to 9x, all is working as it should be. 6x in Windows, ramps up to 9x when loaded.

Thanks for the help guys.
