E7400 stuck sensor and crap OC!

Hi guys!

Just bought a shiny new E7400 to replace my aging E6600. I was hoping for a bit more of an overclock on this new chip considering its 45nm and all but the biggest problem atm is the way the temp sensors are stuck at 52c?!

I boot up Realtemp however and it states 42. Bios and Coretemp meanwhile state 52c. Whats going on?

It must be the chip as that is the only thing that changed in my rig?

Or has my mobo somehow died when installing it?

Many thanks!

Tom

What are your specs( heat sink, how many fans, what type of case).
You sometimes have to wait for the thermal paste to set before temps look right.
The bios is the most reliable of them all by far.

Well the thing is lads even on stock OC I am getting BSODs in Vista. NOTHING has changed apart from the processor.

I have:

Silverstone SG01 Sugo
ASUS P5K-VM Micro ATX Mobo
4GB 8500 DDR2 Crucial Ballistix Mem
Sapphire 4850 512MB
Vista 64
SoundBlaster X-Fi Audio
Silverstone 500W PSU

Games seem to be BSOD more than anything although it has done quite a few times in winblows to. Is it a case of RMA for this chip?

They only have one BIOS newer than what I am using and it is a BETA. Safe to go ahead and flash? Otherwise I have the latest official release.

Tom

Forgot to mention that I used Artic Cooling MX-2 paste and am using the Silverstone NT06 Lite cooler for the CPU. I also tried a Zalman 8700 and still the same BSODs...

Could be that they're using different values for TJ Max. I mean, it's not uncommon to have one software use a temperate 10C higher or lower than another. What does Coretemp and/or RealTemp report under load vs idle?

No thats the point mate, the temp NEVER changes. I mean I can get as far as a half hour game of Company of Heroes if I am lucky without a BSOD and the temp will still be 52c. It's proper weird!

Never had a chip do this before...

Have you used the RealTemp sensor test?

I had an E8600 that was stuck at 45 C, I tried everything, bios updates etc. but nothing would fix it, I returned the CPU.

Updated to latest BIOS and it still BSODs. Also, I tried the RealTemp sensor test and it reported a sensor movement of 0 for both...RMA the chip?

Unfortunately as it's in a Silverstone SG01 I'm really not up for that. The fact that the sensors are stuck should be enough for an RMA imo. Don't know if any of you have experience with this case but you have to dismantle/assemble it in a very particular order and the HSF I have with it (Zalman 8700) is a NIGHTMARE to dismount. As the case is so small as well it really makes you want to cry like a little girl at the prospect of touching ANYTHING inside that diddly ickle hand shredder...

OK another update here lads...

Reading your comments I agreed with many of you and thought that it was unlikely to be the CPU (even though it is the only component to change in this rig).

Therefore, I left a Memtest going over night and guess what!!

LOADS of errors on the RAM. That certainly explains the BSODs! LOL!

Couple of questions now:

1. Could these errors in memtest be caused by bad timings/voltage/freq of RAM?
2. Could these errors be caused by heat? Got the errors on pass 6
3. It is Crucial RAM so I am not surprised (in the nicest possible way!) but I have had more than 6 faulty sticks of RAM from them.
4. Even after 2 years will it still be in warranty for an RMA direct to crucial?
5. Could a mod possibly move this thread to the 'memory' section of the OcUK forums?
6. The CPU STILL has a stuck sensory even after a BIOS update - should I consider contactng Intel for a replacement or just live with it?

Many thanks!

Tom

Did you get BSODs as well mr x plosion? I haven't tried the sensor test - I'll be sure to when I get back from work! T

Mine was stable but I wanted to clock it well passed 4Ghz and without knowing the temps it would have been risky so I sent it straight back to OcUK for a refund, put my Q6600 back in as I couldn't be bothered messing round with it again.

Well I dont think I can be faffed sending the CPU back tbh its SUCH a mish to even get to in this Sugo case. The memory on the other hand, if it does turn out to be the mem well...not so bothered as I'm sure we can all agree that is the least hassle in terms of physically upgrading. I can grab 2GB of working RAM from my parents computer for the day and see if I still get BSODs...

Are you 100% sure you've set the ram timings/voltage settings correctly? As in, find what the default settings are from their website or something, and set them manually in bios.

Also, you have to find the correct tjmax for your cpu and then at least you’ll get closer to your actual temps. Playing games is not a proper way to test the sensors in my opinion, run some intel burn test or prime or some similar test.

If your temps go up during a test, it means that they're working, I guess. :o

Yer sorry shudda mentioned also did some cinebench and no movement. Likewise, set timings manually as well as the voltage. I really do only have 1 stick of working ram now haha!

RMA the CPU after trying memory as I have E7400 and it clocks nicely at 3.8 Ghz ATM got it to 4ghz but it meant I had to run fans on high and the voltage increase was not worth it and I want to be able to hear next year:)
