Hi,

E7400 (2.8 to 3.4Ghz-OC) w/Artic Freezer Pro
Asus P5QLE board
FSB 400 x 8.5
CPU at 1.35v
Mem at 1.88v

The above OC worked for years. Suddenly after an SSD install, when trying to re-set the above OC settings. The PC doesn't even post.
I have only plugged in my SSD and one HD.

This might sound daft, but would setting the HD storage in BIOS to AHCI mode alter the OC somehow?

This is a legacy pc now, I get it. Let the jokes commence...I'm just curious as to why it doesn't boot with previous OC settings. It boots fine with stock/defaults.

Help please...I've got greys in places not seen now! ack!

Its not clear from your post - have you tried clearing the BIOS and re-entering the OC settings again?

While very unusual for a HDD change its perfectly possible for almost any hardware change to potentially destabilise a previously stable overclock if it was on the edge of stability before.

@Rroff
That is unusual indeed. I did clear the BIOS and reentering the settings.
I have managed to boot and get into Windows with FSB at 333.
Previously it was set at 400. Funny thing is, I managed to have it stable so far with 10.5 multi (max) with 333, giving me a 3.4Ghz read. Whereas before, it was 400x8.5=3.4Ghz.
Everything this is the same in my BIOS settings

What would cause this issue? Could it be that my board needs more juice? (can't be).

I have that CPU at 4GHz stable on a P5Q Pro, with an SSD. Been running like this for a while, so can't remember any issues relating to the SSD installation and the overclock settings.

What's your PSU wattage? What other devices are present?

Hi, Ryan0r,

I'm giddy to read about another person still keeping this ancient workhorse alive. :)

My PSU is 600W.
Devices present are as follows:
1x ATI 4850HD 512MB (will probably get a replacement soon)
1x SSD
1x 1TB Platter HD
I have unhooked the other three platter HDs since they are at currently needed.

I have recently just installed a Arctic Freezer Pro Rev2. (my old one had mounting issue).
CPU temp readings are averaged between 30-38

My current CPU-Z reading is as follows:
Clocks (core #0)
Core Speed : 3496.3 MHz
Multiplier : x 10.5
Bus Speed: 333.0 MHz
Rated FSB: 1332.0 MHz

CPU at 1.35v
Mem at 1.88v

I wonder what your bios settings are and whether I can emulate your settings to make it clock higher. I know that my motherboard allows higher FSB up to 1600 MHz.
If you could share some settings within your BIOS that would be just awesome benchmark for me to start with.

Thanks for keeping my hope alive and my trusty workhorse. :)

First, apologies - upon further re-acquainting, it's an E8400 in mine now, which is a 3GHz chip at 4.07GHz, so nothing too exciting OC-wise. I have had it pretty aggressively overclocked previously, up around 4.4/4.5GHz i think. I reduced it a while ago and have left it ticking over where it is. Nothing too fancy in the BIOS, voltages all default and FSB at 450, CPU ratio at 9. Everything else default or auto. These may be sub-optimal, as RAM speed is affected too. FSB:DRAM ratio is 1:1 though... There may well be better settings for this, I reduced the overclock and stopped trying so hard.

SATA is indeed set to AHCI.

For info, my setup is as follows:
E8400
Asus P5Q Pro Turbo
Alpine Pro 7 CPU cooler
4GB Corsair XMS2
Asus HD7850 1GB
Samsung 840 Pro SSD 128GB
+Mechanical HDDs

Yes, it's upgrade time, going Skylake very soon.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, buddy.
