E8400 before and after (lapping)

Hi guys

Decided to lap the cpu that i received last week.

What you think of my first go?

Will have to report back after i've lapped the sunbeam and check temps...

I like that. Was it particularly tricky? I'm trying to reduce the temps on my Q6600 a bit, am tempted to lap it.

Also, the Noctua cooler has a ridged finish on it [presumably to allow the thermal paste to fill the gaps or something], hands up who thinks it should be lapped too?

Well warranty is voided so les hope temps are better.

Nice straight reflection lines - shiney is easy - flat means you spent the time well.
Lap a heatpipe - I wouldn't - the pipe wall thickness is under 1mm and it's already be thinned in production...

Edit: Also micro groves is as good as mirror finish (dependant on TIM) maybe better.

The aim of lapping is FLAT not a Reflection.

Lap it, its quite some fun! Especially if you got an hour to spare on your hands...

Must say i didnt get that kind of a finish when i did my q6600 with halfords stuff. Only went up to 1500 grit which made it reflective, but certainly not a mirrored finish like that looks.

I think you need to use metal polish to get the real mirror-finish?

I did try it once but I was put off my some people saying the metal polish get's into the surface layers and impedes the proper TIM performance! . . . lol how geeky!

I stop at 400/600 grit myself, seems to do the job, if I go any higher grit the finish gets all black and sooty from the fine grades for some reason? :confused:

I didn't use any polish.
Simply kept going up grades of paper.
Started at 600 > 800 > 1200 > 1500.
Kept going over the same spot on the 1500 and it came out like this, blow off all the dust and was done.

Looking good, lapped my q6600 and TRUE black and it made quite a difference to the temps, done both upto 2000 grit, which was a bit of overkill, didnt bother with any polish, just dry lapping and a fine brush to stop the sandpaper from clogging with soot.

I lapped a E2180 and i went up to 2500 grit which made it quite high polished. Corner wasn't very flat though. I stuck like 1.7v through it and my WC held it fine.
