E8400 help... not enough power?

Hey. I got my E8400 through the post today and am still waiting on my new mobo (P5Q-E) but figured I'd test out the CPU on my current board. Anyway, installed it but it just would not boot! Would start like normal for about 2 seconds, hear the drives working and fans spinning but then shut down, and auto start again a few seconds later... just kept looping round like that. Anyway, put my old CPU back in and it boots fine.

Is there a fault with my CPU? Or is it not getting enough power? It only has a 4pin CPU power socket, not an 8 pin like most today, so could that be the problem? I didnt think the E8400 used that much power though

Its second hand, but from an ebay shop with around 17,000 positive feedback and a 2 week return policy, so I can return it if its faulty, but just wondering what you guys think about it?

Cheers

You reset the bios to normal before putting the new chip in? It's possible that the settings that ran your e1400 fine don't work with the new processor, though your board *should* notice a new chip and set things to default automatically I've found that mine doesn't always do so.

Otherwise, yeah it looks like the chip is dodgy. The psu is well capable of running your system. If you put the e1400 back in and it runs fine, then you get to find out how good the shop is. Good luck

4 pin power won't be the problem.

Maybe update the bios?

Also a good idea to use 1 stick of ram and unplug the HDDs and DVDs, just to see if you can get it to post.

If it's still the same it's probably be dead, or your mobo has an issue.

Jon, I reset the bios using the jumper on the mobo, just resets everything to auto.

Hope its not dead, but will test when my new mobo arrives, hopefully tomorrow or the thursday. If that still fails will do like you suggest Sasahara and if its still bad, send it back :(

Would appear not. Have a try at resetting the CMOS and booting with one stick of ram, it could be that the RAM needs more than 1.8v to boot up with 4GB installed with that E8400.

I wouldnt trust auto settings everytime either. Does that board have a readout page so you can confirm what voltage. Also have you tried setting the BIOS CPU info manually. I had to do that once as well.

Well I just tried installing it again today (sick of waiting for the new mobo!) and worked fine, booted first time and now running stable (well, 30mins of prime95 stabe) at 3.6GHz just from upping the fsb.

Dont know what the problem was last time, Ive put the same amount of thermal paste on in the same way and everything. Maybe just tightened the water block down a bit more on one side so it didnt make contact fully... its all I can think of that may be different

Oh well, drama over anyway haha, sorry guys
