Daughter is showing an interest in pcs so as I had an old E8400 and an itx board for it was going to build that for her but thdn got thinking about looking out for a more modern board and cpu.

So what is equivalent of this cpu?

Matt

Currently I have a setup with:

i7 3770k
280X
16GB ram (waiting for it to turn up, to replace 8 GB DDR3)
Asus sound card
Asus wireless AC network card

My daughters I have currently:
e8400
mitx mb zotac
2GB ram
AMD 5770 gcard

So the option is to give my daughter the new board with the 5770 gcard or build the pc for myself with the 280x and buy a better cpu equiv of 3770k when funds allow.

Game at 1920 * 1080.

I have two large cases available and a small antec mitx case.

regards,

Matt

1150 socket and i3 would be much better than the e8400, hell, you find a 2500k that is older than 1150 and a board to go with it will out perform your daughters computer.

what power supply used in the builds?

as for ddr4 im no expert, but was reading and viewing reviews on youtube that ddr4 is faster and lower volts, but the worth to buy is down to the individual.

I have an old enermax 600W powersupply.

DDR3 will be cheaper as I already have it, just got 16GB of kingston hyperx.

Am just wondering, the options are:
* Give her my PC 3770K but leave her with the 8GB ram and 5770 gcard, buy a new 1150 board with a cheapish dual core cpu and use my new 16GB ddr3 and 280x gcard
* Give her my pc the 16GB ram and just buy a board to take ddr4, new mem and cheap dual core for myself.
* just leave her with the 8400 and me with the 3770k?

Will I notice much difference between cheap ddr4 and my ddr3, if not really then I might as well stick with the ddr3 for longer - we don't game much.

Last time i upgraded my parents PC i gave them an i3 and a cheap mobo as the i3s are still super fast at normal tasks and an SSD so it boots super fast. I think theyre the most important things for somone who doesnt game so you can boot up in a few seconds and load all your programs instantly. If she doesnt game then i would just use the cheap GPU you already have or even the onboard, then if she decides to game in the future you can give her your 280x and upgrade your own card which is always a bonus.

I definately wouldnt give her the 3770k as that should last you through another GPU upgrade yet as some newer games use the multi-threading.

I'd say even an Core i3 is overkill for "normal tasks". And SSD and modern motherboard (for fast booting) makes far more difference to end user experience than HyperThreading.

if she games and her board support it then get her a Core2Quad, i got myself a q6600 G0(better version) for £20 from a 2nd hand shop and i fitted a akasa K32 which i paid about £3 more than what this site sells it and in the week ive had it cant fault anything.

otherwise if she doesnt game, but you want her to have something newer then this would do the trick

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £94.84
(includes shipping: £9.90)

or look at an APU maybe?
