I'm thinking about getting a dual core just for some fresh silicon to OC and have a play about with. Also to give myself a decent first hand perspective on the "dual vs quad for everyday and gaming use" argument.

What I wondered is if it is really worth paying £90 more for 0.33GHZ extra between what otherwise seem to be identical chips.

Is the 8600 just for those who want a guarantee with their higher clocks?
Will an 8400 still reach 4GHZ+?

Cooling shouldn't be much of an issue, CPU is on a small water loop.

E8600 has multiplier x10 .
Every E8400 or E8500 E0 rev. can reach 4 Ghz easy - but if you want go higher 4.5 GHz you need set higher FSB, and then you need quite good Mobo.IMO E8600 it's not worth 90 quid more.
