as the title says. i'm not building it, it's from a local shop and the Q6600 is only £2 more. i'm sure he will not overclock. so which ones better?

If it's strictly for gaming purposes, E8400. If he's into browsing, multi-tasking, photoshop, video editing, anything like that, go for the quad.

with a reasonable gfx card, q6600

mine is at stock 2.4ghz with an 8800gt, and ive played through crysis, ut3, gears of war, team fortress 2, company of heroes... loads of stuff

Quad is more futureproof and can be overclocked if needed :)

I'd go with the Quad personaly

Tell him to get the Q6600 and then overclock it when he's not looking - such a waste not to oc it!

If you want an easy life take the E8400...they run so damn cool it won't matter when it's neglected and the heatsink fills with fluff, then you won't have to be unpaid tech support ;)

Depends on how good a friend the friend is as to whether to take the increased effort over the quad I suppose! (Not that there's much extra effort there, just requires better cooling).

If buying a Quad today, get one of newer 45nm ones, the Q600o is old now.

It will run cooler and give less troubles with Mobo's esp if OC'ing.

£146 v £176ish (if OEM or Retail) for Cooler/Better CPU IMO, even the OC Q6000's they claim will OC to 3.3GHZ cost more at £193.
