Well I have decided to do a minor upgrade on my computer to help it cope a litte better with Battlefield 3.

Currently I have

Asus P5N-E SLI
E6600 @ 2.4ghz
4gb Ram
ATI 5750

Now I was planning to get a gtx560ti and a new cpu. The only slight problem is what CPU to get. I have narrowed it down to two choices, the support on this motherboard is not great.

So the question boils down to, should I get a E8400 or Q6600. This computer is only really used for games.

Agree with above, your current E6600 with a small overclock would perform the same as a stock E8400. As the 8400 is a 1333FSB you're unlikely to get any significant OC.

The main benefit is going for a quad, i.e. Q6600 which will OC to around 3Ghz on your board.

Is more of an upgrade not an option? Some good deals on Phenom BE, mid range AMD board and DDR3 coming in around £175 less what you can sell your existing parts for.

No more of an upgrade at the moment sadly, though I may look again in about a years time. I don’t tend to usually sell any old bits as I use them for another computer for the kids.

Thanks for the replies, I will look for a second hand Q6600.

Well I got the GTX560ti today, and at the moment it has not made that much of a difference. From looking at the CPU / GPU useage it seems it is my CPU that is the problem now. The CPU is running at 100% all the time and I don't seem to get much difference in frame per second between Low and Auto.

I managed to get a Q6600 so hopefully that well help things along. I am planning to see what it runs like at stock and then try overclocking it to approx 3Ghz.
