Hey guys.. So im considering moving to a i7 920 setup from my e8400/4gb geil black evo/p5q. Was wondering what have peoples experiences been? I will be using 3d studio max, photoshop, various game engine editors, Maya and gaming (am keeping my 4870 1GB for now).

Going from a dual core to 8 logical cores would also be very nice for my encoding that I do from time to time and the transcoding from my media centre software which I use very often (student-house, comes in handy for streaming)

Thanks

I went e6750 to i7 920 and am very happy. The 920 clocks well comfortably, and is a solid chip. I also know there is some headroom for quite some time from new tech (chip improvements seem to have slowed from times past).

yeah the i7 930 is the only thing in the pipeline.

looks identical to the 920 except its 2.8GHz rather than 2.66GHz so i guess the multiplier is +1.

The fact the 920 goes to 4GHz very easily makes the 930 kinda pointless, just like the 940, 950 etc. Unless its at the same price point i guess

Could you clarify where you saw the most difference? I've got a similar chip to yours so it would be good to see where people see where the improvement is.

To be honest, I don't think you 'see' the real difference in real life. All I know is it feels like no lag in the latest games (MW2, ArmaII) and 'smoother', and the feel good factor that you have a new chip.

well i have an E8400 at 4ghz and i have "no lag" in games.... haha

I think you wont notice any difference at all in a game, the real benefit will be as you say the encoding will be a touch faster.

well, i've took the plunge, and while im expecting a nice boost in terms of general work related apps and also rendering/encoding im not expecting a massive boost game-wise. All in all i think this will future proof me for a long while.

thanks for the discussion/advice guys, this is what i "plunged into"

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) -
Asus P6T Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 2000MHz PC3-16000C10 Low-Voltage Triple Channel (OCZ3G2000LV6GK)
Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket LGA775/1156/1366/AM2/AM3)

Having effectively missed out a "generation" (Quadcore) you should see big differences.

While my i7920 is faster than my q9550 the q9550 still holds up very well clock for clock for most things.
The C2Duo (E6600) I have on the other hand was getting left behind in even single core apps, nevermind multi core apps.

I'm sure you'll be happy.

PS: Only took you 18Hours to decide too. :D
