E8400 vs Q6600

if you 100% are not going to overclock i wouldn't pay over the odds for either an e8400 or q6600 as i think your probably gonna pay at least £100 for the e8400 or god knows how much more for the q6600 and be left with either a 3ghz dual or a 2.4 ghz quad :(

in your situation i would have to go for a phenom 2 x4 955 and a 760g motherboard which you will get for around £160 of ocuk.

that will mean you have a 3.2 ghz quad and be able to use your ddr3 that you have and you could sell your current motherboard to offset a bit of the cost.

i would never normally suggest this but as you state catagorically that you will not buy second hand and will not overclock it is the only purchase that would make sense to me.

I have Corsair H50 cooler ready to use
AMD® Phenom™ II X4 955
  • 16 x 200 = 3200
  • 17 x 200 = 3400
  • 18 x 200 = 3600

Well if KHALIK can get it together to sell the LGA775 mobo (£50?) then he's got more money in his pocket? . . . if he "miraculously" gets a refund from his unlucky CPU transaction he is well ahead!

Not, The e8400 are quite delicate things, cos they degrades very quick if too meny volts are passed through them.

Sorry, I should have qualified this with "65nm" Core 2, you are indeed right that the 45nm chips don't like the volts nearly as much.

Hopefully the OP wasn't too confused, as that post was about the Q6600 (65nm).

Call of duty games have always played smoother on quads. Tho you very much need to overclock that Q6600 even if its just to 3gig to make it worth it.

Also clock for clock the Q6600 will crap all over the 955 in COD games and probably BC2 - if your not going to overclock tho the 955 is the better option.

Definately recommend the q6600. I have machines with both in them and with the newer games the q6600 performs wayyy better. Albeit you need to overclock it to at least 3.2 ghz...

if that ddr3 ram was used on on a LGA775 Platform it will be a higher voltage than 1.6v as they had to lower the voltage rating of ddr3 for the onboard memory controllers on the new intel and amd chips so he will have to buy some new ram correct me if iam wrong please

I can't believe no one has asked about the graphics card being used.

Because if it's not a very high spec one then it won't matter too much which processor is used.

What graphics card is being used for gaming is far more important than what processor.

I bought a e8400 off the market on oc ran a burn in test for over 2 hours no problems for 55 pounds have now sold that to my mate :-) btw for the same price.
also just purchase q6600 on eee BAY for 72.51 bargain. thats going in my shuttle if i can overclock it thats my second PC btw
