E8500 or Q9550?

Yea see if you can get one second hand. I managed to get an E8400 delivered for £100, saves £50 :D

As for what to get brand new... guess that depends on what your doing with your system? If your gaming and general use Id say get the E8500 as its faster core speed will be best for you. If you do lots of video encoding or other things which will make the use of all 4 cores, then go for the Q9550

i was thinking the same, but 200mhz isnt really worth it over 2 cores for future proofing.

Although ive decided to wait until late summer for my purchase, im gonna keep my eyes open for the 9550 e0 stepping to come on. Id rather not spend £200 on a processor only to find it has an improved brother.

For how much though?

Nah im gonna get a quad brand new, i can afford it so why not
I would have said get an E5200 and overclock it . . . then years in the future when you want a cheap upgrade pick up a used 45nm Quad in Members market for like £65 :D (quad may be useful by then!)

There is no reason to spend more than £150-£200 total on a LGA775 CPU/Mobo these days to get maximum bang for buck!

From a gaming standpoint?

As I'm sure you know video editing/ photoshop and encoding all are way way faster on quad core.

I thought everyone knew that?:D

And why are you obsessed with with being a skinflint?

If you have the money then enjoy it.

You can't take it with you you know...!

Well I use Photoship nearly every single day and it proves a light task on a 4GHz 6Mb Wolfdale

You have a point with video editing however It's not something I do a lot and when I do the 4GHz 6Mb Wolfdale just burns through my light editing tasks.

However as I've said above and maybe it's something youve missed while you been away if that thanks to CUDA and the birth of GPGPU computing it seems possible to use an nVidia GPU for a *massive* speedup in your encoding/transcoding duties . . .look into it as I know you dabble in editing

And why are you obsessed with with being a skinflint?

I'm just expressing my viewpoint on how I see things! . . . I personally feel bang for buck is cool!

bang/buck setup + multiplayer game + lots of beer = win

'course I usually go for the parts with slightly less bang/buck ratio but still good :)

I still remember my old Athlon XP mobile 2400 that did 2.4ghz at 1.65v which was the stock for the 3200 desktop running at 2.2ghz which also cost a lot more.

Also the mem I have does the same speed than the higher rated modules at tighter timings and lower voltage (666mhz ram @ 800mhz 8-8-8-20 1.5v vs 800mhz 9-9-9-24 1.65v)

I pay homage the bang for the buck god too. Why pay more when that money could go on beer or a game?

Cause not everyone drinks for starters and not eveyone plays games.

The T total crowd could easily just say...

" why spend 60 quid on a night out ******* your money up the wall"

That 60 you wasted on booze could get me an i7!

Everyone is different.

Ok on some good books or food for a couple of weeks?

The point is it doesn't matter.

If you have the money then spend it on what you damn well like!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wether thats a i7, ipod, ice cream, or trips to iceland!

Bang for buck can be cool. But ramming it down people's throats aint!

I think what you are reffing to as "ramming down throats" loosely translates to someone talking common sense :p

You just being difficult now for the sake of nothing better to do, you made your point, we laughed, its all good!
