Well im mainly a gamer but feel that some new games support quads ,

What would you do sell the e8600 and get a Q9550 or keep it

I would like to overclock the quad to 4ghz on air if possible!

My E8600 is now at stock (used to be 4.6 when i had water cooling)

I went from e8400 to q9550. It made multiple virtual machines better but otherwise achieved nothing other than a lower clock speed. I'm sad to say I don't think you'll notice a difference.

Depends how much you can sell your current CPU for. If you end up not paying a lot of extra then i would probably do it and stick with it for some time.

Also depends on how often you upgrade really. I tend to use PCs for 3-5 years before upgrading the whole system. I usually just change graphics cards, add hard disks etc.

I have just made the move from a E8500 to a Q9550 and the gains in some games (that make use of all the cores) are quite noticeable. Smoother running for one thing. Aside from that though no difference. I mainly did it because 775 get's killed off next year and i can see the prices of the remaining quads going through the roof just like the duals did for AMD's socket 939 after they killed it off.

A word of warning though. X38/48 is bloody terrible for clocking 45nm quads. My DFI is fsb limited to just under 442 yet with a dual it easily does at least 520. It's a shame because this Q9550 is doing 3.6Ghz with stock volts.

Pastymuncher is right, a q9550 will clock to 4ghz with ease on the right board, in this case your talking p45 chipset boards, but tbh you wont notice much difference in games, ive had 3 intel quads, a q6600 at 3.8ghz, a q9550 at 3.8ghz and my current i7 920 at 4 ghz, gaming wise none of theese chips made much difference over my nephews e8500 at 4ghz, windows felt a wee bit snappier, its all down to the vid card theese days in games as all were getting is console ports.

what sort of clocks would i expect to make on air , on my x38 maximus formula?

i will upgrade next year sometime when some new chipsets and cpus come out but for now id like the cheapest upgrade

I've had a q9650 at 4.4ghz and there really was no difference between that and a dual core at 4-4.5ghz.

well ive sold my e8600 now and a q9550 is on its way

what sort of clocks should i get on my maximus x38?

also whats the max safe voltage on these chips?

I've just managed to overclock my dual core intel passed my overclocked quad core amd so I'm now going to see how this affect it's performance.

I went for a dual before I got the quad because they were much quicker but to be honest all modern games only require a dual 2.6GHz so if you can get a quad then it should be better in the long run

x38's seem to top out at 450 fsb from what ive seen of a few users on here, vcore wise the max reccomended is 1.4 vcore for a 24/7 overclock particularly if on air cooling.

Yep, the few examples ive seen have been people using 45nm quads such as the q9550/q9650. Pastymunchers post 4 above is one example ive seen.

I easily had 520 out of a Asus P5E and the same on my DFI with a E0 stepping E8500 but this DFI is useless with a 45nm quad. Currently stuck at 3.62Ghz and even that's taking a lot of tweaking with the board voltages. It will do 441.7 but it takes a hell of a lot of voltage on the NB and others to achieve this. The quad is running at 3.6Ghz on stock volts so it's a good clocker. Seriously considering swapping the boards in my rigs over as the other rig has a MSI P45 Platinum in it with almost as many options in the bios as the DFI.

Yep, i seen that Greebo had a similair issue with a q9650 in an x38, iirc he switched boards for a gigabyte P45, 3.6ghz on stock volts is what mine was capable of as well (1.200 vid) though i did run it on slightly higher volts at 3.8ghz.

I have a P5E with a Q9650, people are right X38s do struggle abit with this chipset on the quads, got mine at 445 nice round 4ghz, will do some more if needed but not much but certainly needs the volts to do it.
Did have it at 4.2ghz when I first got the chip then lost stability over time.
Great dualcore overclocker well in excess of 500fsb, did think of changing it for P45 but seeing as my mosfets are watercooled and having to add in the cost of the blocks for new board, decided it wasn't worth it for a few mhz.

So i take it from the comments higher up that no-one would particularly recommend upgrading my Q6600 @3.6 to a Q9550 (whatever the overclock)? No noticeable improvement to be seen in games?

No it's not a very sensible upgrade.

However, the Q6600 is old and busted and the Q9550 is the relatively new hotness!

I've been considering a similar upgrade. E8600 to Q9650. PC spec in sig.
It would cost me £180, I don't know if I could sell my E8600 either.

I'm thinking it is a waste of money and that my current machine could last another year before I replace anything or do a new build entirely.
