Hi guys,

Had an issue with the handbrake on car for a few months now and finally it's annoying me enough to put some effort into looking into it.

Every so often I'll get a fairly long squeal when moving off. It only ever happens once the handbrake has been engaged and even then it doesn't do it every time. Once I've been moving for a few seconds or so the squealing stops. There's no feeling of resistance either so it doesn't feel like the handbrake is sticking on or anything like that.

I know it has to be handbrake related as earlier on today I came to a stop at traffic lights on a slight decline. I put the handbrake on then came off the foot brake and the car moved forward a tiny amount (as it always does) and I heard the squealing for a split second then. When moving off after releasing the handbrake it squealed for a few seconds before going away. Another reason is if I start to move off and it starts to squeal, I can come to a stop again, lift the handbrake again slightly and release it then when I move off again there's no more squealing.

It started a while back when I changed the rear brake pads and discs - I of course used anti squeal paste on the back of the brake pads when putting the new ones in so it couldn't be that anyway. The foot brake is absolutely fine so there's nothing wrong with the pads or the discs, that much is clear.

As far as I can tell it's coming from the rear passenger side. I've had the disc off since and can't see anything obviously wrong but to be honest when it comes to handbrake shoes with the brake discs I've got no idea. I'll probably end up taking it to a garage but I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Braking performance is fine and the handbrake at least appears to be working fine - even on steep inclines/declines the car stays put no problem so I'm not massively worried about it - it's just annoying me now. The slightly irritating thing is that it doesn't even do it all the time, it can be a few days before it starts doing it again and it can do it whether I've been driving for a while or whether it's from cold.

has got to be the pads, maybe temperatures/surface of disc(surface rust/water/salt) etc effect the noise that comes out of it!

I'd just drop a set of new pads and I think it'll sort your issues.
