a friend of mine has a hard copy of BC2 on disk
like a fool i gifted him the vietnam expansion on steam
this means he cant access the expansion on his hard copy [which is not linked to steam]

the question is, with BC2 so cheap at the moment, he was thinking of purchasing it via steam.

could he sell his hard copy of bc2 to recoup the costs?
or is it linked to his EA account, can it be resold?

Can he not use his product key from Steam BC2: Vietnam to activate on his BC2 retail copy?

I dont have the expansion but my understanding is you use the code "in-game" and it is tied to your BC2 user account so it does not matter where the key came from, as long as you have a valid key.

It activates the same as pre-order weapon unlocks, I think? You enter it into the "Vietnam" tab when logged into the game.

Everyone "has" the expansion as it was rolled out with one of the recent updates, you just need a key to "unlock" it.

that was my theory
but as he doesnt have bc2 on steam, he hasnt got it on his games list so cant access the code

is there another way of doing it?

oh goody a similar thread i was going to post :)

I have the dvd version installed,if i bought it on steam would i be able to transfer my bc2 account over to the steam version using the ingame email/login process or would i have to create a new account ?

The FAQ on the battlefield steam forum covers this:

You have bought the base game somewhere else, and someone has gifted you Vietnam on Steam - well... Long story. The gifting will succeed. Steam will know that you have Vietnam, but you will not see it in the Steam client because you do not have the base game. Therefore you will not be able to view the 16-digit code for Vietnam. Contact Steam support to resolve this.
