At Electronic Arts' E3 2008 press conference this afternoon, John Carmack (co-creator of Doom and co-founder of Id Software) announced that id Software would join the publishing giant through its EA Partners program. EA's rapidly growing program is also home to mega-developers like Valve and Crytek. Carmack also announced that id's newest release, Rage, will be published by Electronic Arts under the new agreement.

Stay tuned for further details as they emerge.

so what do we think? good bad? how much input do you think EA will have in the development of the game? or will they take a purely hands off we'll publish it when you want us to approach?

It seems to me like EA sort everything out bar the game, so all the money and advertising will be EA but the development will be done by the original people. Hope that's the way I read it.

I hope they keep their noses out during the development process, sadly being EA i'm worried that won't be the case.

Then again id have always held a game back until it was 100% complete, and I hope this will be no exception.

They're just distributers, same as they are with Valve's stuff. They have no say whatsoever in the creative process.

Did not expect this, i'm getting sick of seeing EA's name on everything.

Although as long as the game is good, what does it matter..

Not always a given with id, of course... ;)

But I don't think this announcement is anything to worry about. id will do their own thing, as ever. Can't see anyone being in a position to push Carmack around. Not exactly short of cash as far as I'm aware, quite apart from anything else...

Activision was a terrible publisher anyway, though not as bad as Atari - still have a grudge against them for the fiasco of the unreadabl NWN CD keys.

It mentions they're joining the same program that Valve are a part of and EA has no say in the development process of Valve games so I can't see this being any different.Although EA may have had a say in Crysis so who knows.
