A few days ago, users in Myanmar found that they could no longer access their purchased EA games through Origin. As reddit user trivial_sublime described the situation:

“I live in Myanmar, and I own about 20 games on Origin, and have spent hundreds of dollars on the platform. I’ve bought the full editions of all of the Battlefield games up to this point, with their season passes. I was trying to log into Origin a few days ago, and got a bizarre “Access Denied” message. I googled it, and found that “Origin is no longer available in Myanmar.”

Surely this is some kind of mistake? All those people who have bought games through Origin can no longer access them. Why on earth would they do that?

Whatever the issue it's easily fixable via a VPN. India banned DA:I because of its half arsed prehistoric views on homosexuality but it hasn't stopped me purchasing and playing it.

There is an issue with EA failing to communicate to its user base that there would be a problem but unfortunately as the consumer these giants rarely seem to give a **** about us.

If people have paid to play games they should never just be able to take access to them away. As much as VPN seems to be the answer now, I also don't think it should be on the customer to find a way around this either.

I'm sure there should be a lawsuit here somewhere for the people who own games in Myanmar.

Burma was under sanctions so they shouldn't have been able to buy any games from Origin in the first place so it's a complete mess up by EA. Sanctions have now been lifted but EA haven't seemingly made the changes to Origin to reflect this like other platforms such as Steam have.

Then the issue still falls on EA's head and either a full refund or lawsuit *should* be in order. It wouldn't surprise me if it's just buried and nothing is done about it however.

Comes to show doesn't in today's digital world. People have such bond with digital services such as Steam but they can easily stop access to all your games you paid £100's for. Abit of a scary thought.

True, but there is probably more chance of me scratching a game disk than that.

Well this seems like a regulatory issue, hope they manage to find a solution soon as I don't believe they should have been selling games to begin with while the sanctions were in place. They have been lifted recently so if anything they should have access.

Pretty interesting point though, it may be cloud based but it's still based somewhere from law point of view so theoretically these services can be suspended due to changing political climates. We're not going to war with USA any time soon though so UK is fine.

Wonder if sanctions were/suppose to be affecting sales of digital games in Russia?
