EA THREATENS TO BAN SPORE ACCOUNTS

Now, there has been a lot of buzz around the web regarding the DRM issues in Spore. Yesterday, EA announced that anyone found to be creating new posts regarding the DRM Issues will be at risk of having their Spore accounts banned. Apparently, their forums are flooded with these complaints and while EA has made a few attempts to resolve this issue, they are tired of hearing about it.
The forum states “Please do not continue to post these threads or your account may be at risk of banning, which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore.” This understandably resulted in a slew of very angry Spore players. In an attempt to calm the mob, another EA representative under the username Maxislucky posted a followup to the message which stated, “We are happy to support healthy exchanges on the forums. And people will only get banned for breaking the rules. Discussing DRM is not breaking the rules - and as long as it is a civil conversation, it’s cool with us.”
The DRM for Spore is run by a system known as SecuROM. Many of the complaints users are having are the result of DRM issues such as the limited number of times the game may be installed which includes the machine it was originally installed on as well as the need to validate the software more than once. This is not the first time SecuROM has caused DRM related issues as BioShock developer 2K Boston and Mass Effect PC creator BioWare have both had to modify the DRM to meet the needs of the consumers.
