EA THREATENS TO BAN SPORE ACCOUNTS

Now, there has been a lot of buzz around the web regarding the DRM issues in Spore. Yesterday, EA announced that anyone found to be creating new posts regarding the DRM Issues will be at risk of having their Spore accounts banned. Apparently, their forums are flooded with these complaints and while EA has made a few attempts to resolve this issue, they are tired of hearing about it.
The forum states “Please do not continue to post these threads or your account may be at risk of banning, which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore.” This understandably resulted in a slew of very angry Spore players. In an attempt to calm the mob, another EA representative under the username Maxislucky posted a followup to the message which stated, “We are happy to support healthy exchanges on the forums. And people will only get banned for breaking the rules. Discussing DRM is not breaking the rules - and as long as it is a civil conversation, it’s cool with us.”
The DRM for Spore is run by a system known as SecuROM. Many of the complaints users are having are the result of DRM issues such as the limited number of times the game may be installed which includes the machine it was originally installed on as well as the need to validate the software more than once. This is not the first time SecuROM has caused DRM related issues as BioShock developer 2K Boston and Mass Effect PC creator BioWare have both had to modify the DRM to meet the needs of the consumers.

I posted it more about EA's over enforcement of DRM than just the specific game. Who do they think they are? The Intahweb police?

There's a simple solution, don't buy EA games.

The quality of some games by EA have been sub-standard anyway.

didnt EA respond by saying that the guy threatening to ban was just a forum mod who doesnt even work for EA

LOL @ the suckyness of E.A

They have a major PR Issue on their hands with SPORE. I think that they think they are invincible.

As said, EA have now said this was just an overzealous mod and that they disagree with him/her.

P.S. I think that totalitarian would've been a more accurate word in this case. ;)

Have to admit that I'm getting pretty fed up with EA. I absolutely disagree with piracy, and don't take part in it myself. However, I fail to see how these restrictions help stop piracy, as people are clearly getting around them anyway! All EA are serving to do is reduce their sales as people refuse to buy their products with DRM!

Don't suppose anybody knows if they are involved with Fallout 3 or Farcry 2 by the way...if they are DRMd I will cry!

Pretty much. Spore was cracked and on the net nearly a week before EU/US release.

No need to worry, Fallout 3 is developed and produced by Bethesda and they tend to only have a CD check in their games. Far Cry 2 is developed and produced by Ubisoft, I like to think they learned their lesson about using crap copy protection systems since they ditched Starforce.

Yay!

Incidentally, does it say on the back of either the Crysis Warhead box or the Spore box anything about the DRM? Seems a bit wrong if it doesn't.

I'm not sure about Warhead as I don't have it yet, but the DRM in Spore is explained in the EULA you see during setup. It does leave some details out though, like the fact SecuROM is permanent unless you format your hard disk (even if you uninstall the game).

Yep which is why I'm buying not pirating it :p

*and I want them to get good sales/profit so theres more money for fallout 4 :p

still i see that limited install is bad idea. if you have reformat your hardrive fast or something. play a game later on.

for example i bought hellgate london i dont think it has limited installed but for some reason. it says that my account does not exist anymore and i cant create new one as i used cd key. yea i know it is poo game but still.
