I'm looking at upgrading my HD in my MBP, ideally to a 750gb.
I'm not that interested in an SSD due to their price.

I also wouldn't mind upgrading the standard 4gb of RAM.

Is there anything anyone can recommend?

Thanks

I know SSD's are more expensive but it really will make it feel like a whole new machine, well worth the money and then get a USB3 portable hard drive if you need mega storage.

To be honest for such requirements if you're on a really tight budget I'd look at using the optibay and having two drives. One for the OS, one for your data.

As for RAM, whatever fits and is competitively priced with decent warranty, no particular recommendations.

Any SATA 2.5" drive will work :) Apart from some of the high capacity 2tb drives as they're a little thicker than standard IIRC, although they may still fit with some jiggling.

This may be a silly question but will my current bootdisk allow me to use it as an external in its current state and get files from it? And then wipe the drive...
Or do I need to back those files up before removing it and then transfer them that way?

Yep you should be able to hook it up and pull files from it no problem after you take it out.

I am still using a late 2010 MBP.

512 SSD and 8G ram.

In web/email use it is almost as snappy as my Quad Core i7 iMac with 32G ram, Fusion Drive.
